Holidays! Everybody loves holidays. Since arriving in Rostock four months ago I've been really busy in the office and havent had a real chance to relax, neither has my girlfriend Lisa :-( So we were both excited to get away from the big city and head out for a break at the beach town of Zinnowitz. After arriving at the the small railway station we began making our way towards where we imagined the Hotel to be, referring back to memorized google maps pictures . On our way down what looked like the main street we walking past the shops and restaurants that service the multitudes of hotels and resorts that during the summer months are twice the price and swarming with holiday makers. The hotel we stayed in during out time in Zinnowitz was a ... read more

Peenemunde! Firstly I must be honest and say that we really only intended to visit Peenemunde because of the submarine, and thus we didn't really spend much time looking anywhere else... but there wasn't really that much else to see either! If you like military stuff then you should visit and read on. If you don't then I don't see any attractions for you and I would recommend skipping this blog and waiting for my next one on Zinnowitz, which without giving too much away is just amazing! We arrived at Peenemunde at around noon on Monday and made our way down to the submarine. As everyone may be aware there had been freezing temperature around Europe due to cold air coming from somewhere really cold, so it was no surprise to see the U461 encased ... read more

Happy Australia day :-) As with most Australians I spent the day reflecting on how awesome Australia is and how lucky I am to be a Australian :-) The cold weather here in Rostock didn't stop me having a BBQ and beers out the back. Unfortunately number 1 I was unable to obtain the recipe for Rostocker bratwurst because it a guarded secret. And the beers? well from my understanding you are talking about two different beers (c photo).... both tasted great! Cheers!... read more

So this blog is dedicated to a fan who contacted me via FB and wanted a update on my situation here in Rostock. I will call this dedicated fan Number1. But let’s keep it friendly I don't have time for stalkers okay? I woke up today to the coldest temperature I have experienced yet in Rostock or the whole of Mecklenburg Vorpommern! My trusty weather station Wally was showing 2.8 degrees BELOW zero. To some that might not be very cold but to a Aussie who grew up in the Northern Territory it's extreme. Grabbing the Cannon 60D I took the opportunity to record some of the condition that were present in the back yard. Since being in Rostock I have only seen real snow once so it's a shame there isn't any at the moment ... read more

Europe » Germany » Mecklenburg-Vorpommern » Sassnitz January 22nd 2012

This is my first Blog of all time, very happy to share with you some of the sites I've seen around Mecklenburg Vorpommern. Last week we travelled from Rostock to Sassnitz which is about 2 hours by train. I had previously looked at Sassnitz for a nice location to photograph the sunrise over the Baltic Sea. After further research I discovered that there is a U-Boat museum there as well :-D Although images of German u-boats might be popping into your head the submarine on display is actually a British Oberon class sub, H.M.S. Otus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Otus_%28S18%29 The submarine is located just a short walk from the train station so no further transport is required. The temperature on this particular day was dropping close to zero and puddles were still frozen from the night before. But apart ... read more

Europe » Germany » Mecklenburg-Vorpommern » Wismar January 19th 2012

Hello again :-) This is a back dated blog to the 19th to include another town I visited in Mecklenburg Vorpommern called Wismar. One hours journey by train from Rostock will have you at the outskirts of this historic harbour town, and everything is within walking distance. The walk from the train station to the first attraction I saw was a matter of 5 minutes or less! The first attraction I'm talking about is the Church of St-Nikolai and its hard to miss really, you would have to be blind, or blind drunk to walk past this building and not see it. Lucky I was in neither of these states on that particular day. 1 Euro will give you access to the church and its impressive interior. Now I'm not religious but you don't need to ... read more

We started of with rain but it turned out a beautiful sunny day. Through this we had the wrong clothes on and it became very hot later in the day. Going direction Koblenz we saw a lock in the river, that invited us to have a closer look. There were a few ships that had to go through. You need to be a very good skipper the be able to steer those ships through these narrow openings. Continuing our trip we landed at a Benedict Convent, at least that is what it was in earlier days. Now it is a restaurant, Museum and Brewery. The building was interesting and had a chapel from 1084. Driving along the Mosel is such a pleasure. The scenery changes, from the small villages dotted along the river to the vines ... read more

Europe » Germany » Mecklenburg-Vorpommern » Rostock August 17th 2011

As we arrived in our destination - Rostock the largest city in Northern Germany - late in the evening we headed straight round to our hotel. It was a bit of a shame that having made it this far around the world without staying in any major chain of hotels, we checked into the Hotel Irbis. Alas, there was not much that we could do about this as Rostock seems to have a dirth of hostels. We got up early the next morning eager to see something of the city before we left on our way to Berlin. Rostock is a somewhat odd city. Its main attraction is by far in a way the city walls, and accompanying towers, which once defended the city. These walls have all largely been removed as they obstructed trade, either ... read more

When we returned to our dock we saw that a tall ship was just being positioned by a tug in front of the Prinsendam. Wow!! What a size comparison between the two ships! I went up to the top deck right away to take pictures and had fun observing all the business of this docking chanal. So many different kinds of boats and ships. There is to be a Tall Ship Festival in the near future here in Warnemunde, so this Russian Tall Ship is here for the Festival. This is a friday afternoon so there are lots of people swarming around on the dock and music from the band in a dockside restaurant. Wa Whoo !! the weekend is here! When we returned to Pier 7 from Rostock, we saw that a Tall Ship was being maneuvered in to the dock right in front of the Prinsendam. WOW!! What a size comparison between the ships! I immediately went up to the top deck to take pictures, and had fun observing the busy - ness of the channel. There is to be a Tall Ship Festival in the near future here in Warnemunde and this Russian Tall Ship is here to participate in the Tall Ship Sail. Warnemunde is a major German resort destination and this is a friday afternoon. So there were plenty of people on the beach and walking the streets.
