Many roads are lined with trees making it feel like you drive in a green tunnel

This chapel on Rügen Island is called Swedish Chapel. Possibly the name comes from when this part of Germany was occupied by Sweden.

In Bad Doberan the railway has a feature which makes it unique. The railway runs through the town more like a tram than a railway.

Heiligendamm is a seaside resort with a faded glory.

Heiligendamm

Heiligendamm used to be the place to go if you were rich and powerful. However, the rich and powerful stopped coming, a World War followed by almost 45 years of communist rule came in the way, so many of the grand villas and hotels fell in disrepair.

We saved this for last because it is a bit odd. This is a bust of Frank Zappa. We found it in Bad Doberan. Why is Frank Zappa so popular that they even put up a bust of him?

Gorch Fock

Did I write about the author Gorch Fock
The ship is named after the author Gorch Fock, or Johann Kinau as his name really was. His speciality was to write novels about ships and sailors. When German men were drafted during WW I the authorities thought Johann Kinau was an experienced sailor and he was drafted into the navy. It's just that he had barely set his foot on a ship... The ship he served on took heavy beating during the Battle of Skagerack and probably sank. Johann Kinau's body was later on found washed ashore on an island on the Swedish west coast. Johann Kinau was then buried on a small island in Fjällbacka Archipelago together with 20 or so other sailors both from Germany and UK. I have actually been to that island and I have seen his grave. /Ake

Bust of Frank Zappa

Bad Doberan is the home of the annual music festival "Zappanale". The festival was first held in 1990. The program features various bands performing the music of the late composer and guitarist Frank Zappa. Many musicians who have previously played with Zappa have performed at the festival over the years.
