Built in 1186 and fought over many times
Many castles dot the landscape in this area, some functional and restored and others well kept ruins.
Near Melsungen is the ruins of a castle built in 1186 called Heiligenberg.
It occupies one of the hills with a commanding view of the area, all the better to see your enemies approaching when you were a lord and castle owner.
Just some of the perimeter walls exisit today and there are picnic areas set up near the top.

At the base of the castle is a 19kms walk with modern art installations, You can do a 1.5kms short version and see many of them. The town adds to these as the weather destroys some and all works are named. A modern art gallery with the gallery being a forest.
