Frankfurt, Germany August 18th We ended up spending a little more than a week at Neuf-Breisach, taking a side trip down to Mulhouse. The weather continues to be hot! By the time we got to Mulhouse (59.38 km) I think I was near heat stroke. We stopped at what we thought was a restaurant outside of town but, it turned out to be a distributor and they didn't have any drinks for us to buy. They did give us a large bottle of water. So nice! The campground was busy and nearly full. After our showers, we kicked back and watched other cyclist come in and set up their tents. We are always amazed at the number of different tents and bikes. In Neuf-Breisach we met a very funny, friendly and great couple from Holland. Every ... read more

Andrew and I decided to stay in Frankfurt today. We have been on the move so much that it was nice to stay in the same place for another day. Today we toured the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History, which has been collecting specimens for almost 200 years. We spent 4 hours looking at incredible exhibit after exhibit -- several dozen dinosaur skeletons, fossils from the beginning of life on earth through today, Egyptian mummies, geological exhibits, and thousands of taxidermied animals and birds from around the world. It was really cool, and Andrew was in heaven. Taking advantage of the spectacular weather, we then wandered to Goethe University, where we found a cool open-air market: prepared food booths, produce, baked goods, books, etc. Had a nice lunch of white sausage, soft pretzels, and spicy mustard, ... read more

Guten tag, alles. First full day in Frankfurt got off to a very slow start. Andrew and I alternated hitting the snooze button til 0830. Even then, we moved slowly, leaving the hotel at 1030. Fortunately, we found a place up the street still serving breakfast, and it was sooo good: boiled egg, crossaint, heavier roll, cheese, butter, tomatoes, and espresso. From there, we took a walking tour of Frankfurt's main sights: Saint Bartholomeus' Cathedral (beautiful and breathtaking), City Hall, St. Paul's Church, Haus Wertheim (built in the 1600s, it is the only house with traditional half-timbered construction to survive World War II), Customs Tower, Iron Bridge (cool views of the River Main as well as city), St. Leonhard Church, and Archeological Gardens. We toured the last, and it was incredible. The museum displayed artifacts found ... read more

We are sitting in the Frankfurt airport waiting in a deli/bar....these things are genius! Deli food, kaffee items, beer and drinks all in one location. We enjoyed a honey Weiss and a woman sat next to me...been in a "dry" country for a year and she said "give me a mohjito....I haven't drank in a year....can you imagine a dry country?" I engaged in an hour long conversation with a Wisconsin woman who has been abroroad with her now 10 year old daughter in tow? what a great treat! We laughed, talked about raising our daughters and the cultural things affecting them. She was meeting friends in Canada but is the actually located in the Arab nations, teaching English....desert area where the temp is around 120 degrees. Her daughter speaks Arabic and English. We talked about ... read more

Our grand adventure has been pretty flawless so far. Our flight was delayed by a few hours and somehow our pilots made up for lost time and we arrived just an hour over the original time. Lufthansa airline is the best! We were fed two meals as well as a tasty snack....and twice we were given moist, warm towellettes to keep fresh with. The service was friendly and my only complaint was we just couldn't sleep. We did have a screaming toddler for the first two hours---yes two FULL ON hours of the kid simply screaming, no tears, over and over with every little breath. Everyone was extremely patient for the first hour and a half. After that, even I was thinking the mom needed to dose the little shaver with a sleep aid. I rather ... read more

The morning started with - - - breakfast :) an early one as the wedding was scheduled for 9:30 am.. 5 of our guests stayed the night at our place so the fact that I'm an early morning person helped a lot in getting organized :) We took the underground to the wedding and crossed the city center in a small and funny parade, attracting some attention from several groups of tourists who got up early enough to see visit the Römer early morning. We were asked to stay outside and wait for the 9:00 am wedding (didn't think that ANYONE got married even earlier than us) so we kept busy with taking pictures, signing important documents (I assume) etc.... it was a lovely sunny day (lucky us) and must admit - I was a little ... read more

Finally reached Germany after a nice long trip! Everything went well for my group, sadly the group we met up with their Begleitslehrers plane ticket was non-existant so he was not able to make it, but I managed to get all 9 kids here in one piece and meet up with their families. Arriving at the hostel was just as easy as I thought it would be luckily. Today I wandered the city, took a walk in the park and checked out the architecture museum (which had some cool buildings in it), the Frankfurter Dom and Goethehaus. I even climbed the Frankfurter Doms Tower, really narrow steps and only one way up and down. More pictures to come!... read more
