We entered the Kiel Canal this morning at 4am - no we did not get up although there were pastries and coffee in the crows nest lounge for those who did. The Kiel Canal is the busiest shipping Canal in the world - more so than the Panama or Suez canals - and cruise ships do not often traverse it. Ours is a small ship and we we allowed to shave off the 400 km we would have needed to go around Denmark. It was a big deal for the communities we went through. People were waiting on the shore with big Welcome flags and many waving to us as we cruised by. It took 8 hours to go through the Canal. We enjoyed sitting on our balcony and watching the landscape. Geo: 53.5534, 9.9922An amazing day, treading in the footsteps of my great-grandfather.Otto Rudolph Carl Sielaff was born in about 1855 in Lauenberg, in what was then Prussia. We know that he came to Queensland, arriving in Maryborough (or Brisbane) on 25 June 1889, on the Merkara ship. He married Hannah Blass (1876-1939) at Laidley in 1898, and lived around the Darling Downs (Gatton, Clifton North, etc, before retiring up in Hervey Bay/Wondai according to Electoral Rolls). My grandfather, Franz Carl Hermann Sielaff was born 25/9/11, in Toowoomba, when his father was 56, and was followed by siblings Wilhelm Carl Franz (16/6/13) and Roberta Doreen Emilie (Wendt) in 1915. Heute ist der letzte Tag meiner Reise und ich habe auch an diesem Tag wieder gut gefrühstückt. Es gab wahrend der 23 Tage Hotels, die boten Frühstück bis 10:00, andere bis 10:30, was ich etwas besser finde, und wieder andere bis 11:00 an, was ich am Allerbesten finde. Insbesondere am Wochenende. Dieses Hotel in Ribe bot am Sonntag nur bis 10:00, aber das habe ich auch überlebt. Danach bin ich zum Bahnhof von Ribe, vorbei am Wikingermuseum. Das habe ich ja nicht besichtigt. Auch das empfohlene Kunstmuseum von Ribe habe ich außen vor gelassen. Von der Sorte habe ich ja während der Reise schon mehrere angesehen. Am Bahnhof habe ich dann noch einen kleinen Schreck bekommen, denn der Zug nach Niebüll, von wo es nach Hamburg weiter gehen sollte, war nicht auf der Anzeigetafel erwähnt. Und ... read more

Gestern bin ich nach ausgiebigem Frühstück Richtung Speicherstadt und Hafencity. Dort gibt es wirklich eine erstaunliche Entwicklung, die auch ruhig etwas schneller laufen könnte. Vor gut 10 Jahren war ich hier schon mal vor dem im Bau befindlichen SAP Gebäude, allerdings scheint mein alter Arbeitgeber mittlerweile aus diesem repräsentativen Viertel weggezogen zu sein. Das gesamte Ensemble ist wirklich sehr schön und die Wohnungen entsprechend teuer. Ich habe also die im Bau befindliche Elbphilharmonie gesehen, den Sandtorhafen, die schönen Magellan- und Marco Polo-Terrassen, wo ich auch ein Eis gegessen habe, und auch noch große unbebaute Flächen. Ein Olympiagelände in der Nähe hätte das ganze natürlich perfektioniert. Nur für Läden des täglichen Bedarfs scheint die Gegend wohl zu teuer zu sein. Geo: 53.5534, 9.9922We never skip a free breakfast and today is no exception. Our train leaves Copenhagen HBF at 9:37am. Our bags are packed for train travel, we have our breakfast and push our tremendous rolling bags down the street and into the station where we board at platform 14. Our train trip is a little over 4 hours, staying on the same train for the entire trip to Hamburg, Germany. My ticket indicates we are on carriage 28. The train will be in the station for only a few minutes so we will need to find our car quickly and board. As always, this luggage is difficult to move about through the train so we need to get it on our assigned carriage the first time. I'm looking for the, well, what I call the ... read more
