Do you remember the castle that featured in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ? It’s the one uncle Walt got his inspiration for the Disney castle from - Schloss Neuschwanstein built by ( not literally of course ) mad King Ludwig II in 1869. We walked the mile up to the top of the hill and checked out Mary’s bridge over a deep ravine and the best place to get a picture of the castle and its setting - spectacular ! We then took the conducted tour - Ludwig had the castle dedicated to Wagner and even had a grotto built in one room with stalactites ( ceiling )and stalagmites ( ground ) - geography lesson over.

After morning lessons we set off to ascend Tegelberg at Schwangau. Jack and I took the cablecar to the top where we got fantastic views of the mountains and the plain below. We also watched the adrenalin junkies with hang gliders and paragliders throw themselves off the mountain side.
Below Ben and Max relaxed in the autumn sunshine and practiced their art and sketching.
On our return from the summit we could not resist
the sommerrodelbahn - a bob cart run 760m long down a stainless steel channel - great fun !
A stop in Fussen for some shopping and sight seeing before returning to camp.

After morning maths we visited Konigliche Kristall-Therme a thermal spa resort as a treat for Max as it is her birthday this weekend. Two indoor and two outdoor pools of different temperatures and salt levels, 33 - 36 degrees and able to float unaided in one as per the dead sea.
From the outdoor pools a view of the Alps and Schloss Neuschwanstein.
What we had not realised was that the sauna suite was ‘textile free’ this became self evident at the entrance and a rapid retreat ensued keeping good old British values intact.
However when in Rome and leaving Max and the boys to the outdoor Jacuzzi I put my best foot forward…
On the journey home we stopped in at the village of Wies and its church - Wieskirche. This is a world heritage site and its interior decoration is spectacular.
