... towards Tegelberg yesterday. You can't see the mountain, it is hiding in clouds.
Tegelberg was again covered in clouds this morning. Still, we decided to go up the hill. Pilots started setting up. But the weather kept on changing. Sometimes, the sun was out, then again we were in a big cloud, and it was even snowing. And believe me, it was freezing cold. Still, a task for the women was set - from Tegelberg west to Falkenstein, then east to Buchenberg, then to goal at the bottom of Tegelberg. 34 km. But there was an occlusion approaching the area, and there was also a storm warning. So finally around two o’clock, the day was cancelled. At least there was the opportunity for pilots to free fly. Most of them did. I was just glad to leave the mountain after six hours up there. I’m still shivering...

The Swifts flew a task. We saw them fly past twice. They flew a 92 km task, to Falkenstein, Schober, Falkenstein, Wieskirche, goal. Manfred won the day, followed by Steve Cox and two other pilots. Local Bob Baier is just flying into goal. It seems that the Swifts have collected enough points to make it a valid World Championship. Yay!

Yesterday, the weather was not

any better. In the team leaders’ briefing at 8:30, it was announced that there would be a re-brief at 11:30. Klaus and I went up the hill, where it was all foggy and freezing cold (-2°C). It had snowed during the night, so there were four or five centimetres of fresh snow. Everything was icy. 20 to 25 km/h of wind. At least the wind was on, not crossing or anything. But that was the only good thing.

At 12, we were told that the day would be cancelled. We caught the cable car down the mountain. The organisers and team leaders had meanwhile discussed whether the comp dates could be extended so that there could be a task on Saturday, too. So Saturday will be used as a spare day if it is necessary to achieve a valid competition.

In the early afternoon, Rebi and I drove to Ulm in order to pick up Mike Harker from the train station who had been to Mainz. He has so many exciting stories to tell. But eventually he had to stop talking because he was supposed to be interviewed later in the day, and he was already gradually losing

his voice due to a cold. The interview was by on3 südwild, they will be here during the whole week. You find the interview here. What an amazing life, what an amazing person!

Rebi and I went for a little flight with World Champion Manfred Ruhmer - not in a hangglider, but in a kind of simulator. Passengers are lifted up by a crane, hanging in hanggliding harnesses. The crane turns a couple of times, which sort of gives you an impression what hanggliding feels like. We ended up in a tree because the crane driver wanted us to build a bird’s nest there 😉. Well, so during a “flight”, I ended up in a tree with a World Champion. Who of you has had the honour of doing that? 😉

In the evening, we had dinner with the German team. It was the first time we were all together. That was a really nice evening.
