Departure from the hotel was a simple affair. Today there was an English speaking person manning the desk in the travel agency next door. We simply handed back our keys and used our Visa to pay the bill. I still can't believe the rate was only $155.00 for two nights right in the center of town. Best deal of the entire trip. Not only was the monastery across the river being built in the early 1600's, but St. Michael's was also under construction. This church and much of the rest of the town were destroyed in 1662. It had to be repaired because it was Baroque.

In order to build a church distinguished from the huge cathedral up the street the local architects that rebuilt St. Michael's after the big fire designed it to look like churches they had seen in Italy. Much of the stucco work and paintings were done by imported Italian artists.

and when we came out it was pitch black. Decent food at the Executioner's House but lousy inattentive service.

At night the huge castle/fortress was ablaze with spotlights. On weekends there are fireworks up above it. The local tour boats sell a "Danube Fire Enchantment” cruise that features unique perspectives on the festivities. Next visit.
