Nuremberg Castle
On the hill, built into the town wall It's a significant day today since it is my birthday. Pity about the number....... However, it was nice to talk to the kids and receive some welcome emails. It was also nice to get some gold earings from my other half.
We beat the hoards to breakfast this morning so were able to get away at a reasonable time for the train for Nuremberg. Unfortunately it was a slow regional train, stopping almost everywhere. The countryside was rolling with mainly cropping as we headed north, through many towns eventually arriving late in the morning. We thought it best to start at the Tourist Office for a map and main POI. First we visited the Childrens Market which our Grandies would have loved. There were rides on a very quaint looking ferris wheel, a train and a merry-go-round as well as stalls with moving characters and things kids would like. Everything had a theme from the past so was quite romantic.
From there we headed for the medieval Nuremberg Castle, built into the city wall to the north of the old town, on a hill overlooking the town. It looks as if it has been added to many times over
the years from the time it was first settled around 1000AD. All the streets are cobbled and they are not easy or comfortable to walk on. On the way back down into the town we stopped into a funny little restaurant in an ancient building. It was full of people but they squeezed us in anyway. We ended up at a table with a couple of old ladies who didn't speak our lingo but were surprised at the amount of my food. So was I!! I asked for pork something or other and think I got half the pig (without the oink of course). Oh my gosh, that was a lot of meat with some peculiar vege like mashed potato but was something else I think. It came with gravy and sauerkraut. It was fine but the size was not. It was reminiscent of the half a duck I had the other day ^_~
We wandered back into the town but by now the weather was deteriorating and we needed umbrellas. We called in and looked around a huge cathedral which had been restored over many years. It had been bombed during the 2nd WW and almost totally destroyed.
After seeing the pictures it's hard to imagine how they managed to rebuild the church to it's present state. Just amazing. Much of Nuremberg must have been destroyed because the buildings look old but they lack the embellishments that the really old buildings have.
We finally made the main market well into the afternoon by which time the rain had settled in and it was cold. It wasn't a great place to be. The products were of a high standard and similar to others we'd seen but there were also points of difference too. The best time to be there is when the lights come on turning the whole scene into a fairy land. We left earlier that we had planned as the weather wasn't pleasant to hang about in. So, back to Regensberg. A different birthday one might say.
