We somehow managed to leave Berlin, despite our train being cancelled and being told just to jump on another one.. There go our seat reservations and plans! No need to worry though as it was very smooth and we arrived in Nuremberg only 20mins later than we thought...
Chris had the idea to visit Nuremberg Zoo while we were here and Im glad he did.. It was unique walking through a near empty zoo in the snow seeing all the animals. Most bizarelly was seeing kangaroos.. in the snow.. in the zoo.. I dont think kangaroos are built for snow! A second highlight was the tiger that did nothing but roar the whole time we were there, you could hear him from anywhere in the park and when you stood in front of him, he really roared.
Nuremberg is famous for its Christmas markets but I have to admit I was a little disappointed. This was supposed to be the best Germany had to offer so standards were set high but delivery didnt quite get there, even though they were quite big.
We had dinner the first night at the hotel and thought the wait for food was
slow.. I take it all back after our second dinner.. Nearly 2hours we waited for food, granted we got a free drink out of it but it was still 2hrs! All because the grill was out but no one told us this.. Our food was delivered two minutes before our "we're gonna walk out" deadline.. The waitress still had the audacity to look pissed that we didnt leave a tip! Seriously, go speak to your chef, or more importantly, if there is a problem, tell people.. dont keep saying "5 more mins, 5 more mins!"
Nuremberg was the heart of the International Military Tribunal trials into the Nazi party leaders at the end of the war. Here, Judges from the US, UK, USSR and France along with prosecutors from each of these countries sat and prosecuted the war criminals from World War Two. The trials were held very similarly to the US, UK and Aus style of Justice where the Judge is the neutral party, the prosecutor has to prove his case and the defence get to cross examine witnesses. Listening to the info, this seems very different from continential Europe where the Judge does his own investigation and
defence do not get to cross examine or even get full disclosure before the start of a trial. The Courtroom where the trials were held is still there today and is still a functioning Court, luckily there was no trial when we went and we got to go inside. When the Cold War started, people lost interest in these trials and war criminals were pardonned and released from prison early.
Nuremberg was also where the Nazi Party really got its start and the public started supporting it. Here Nazi Party Rally Grounds were built and mass events were held where people all of Germany would come to see Hitler. The stories of the Nazis rise to power was very interesting and alot of it played out here. Its fitting that the trials of these criminals were then held here.
