Hotel Hoefler
My favorite hotel so far...our room is right in the corner where to buildings meet.... After breakfast, we started out our day with a short trip to Nuremberg to visit the site of the Nuremberg Trials and the Hitler Congress Museum. It was almost sickening to view the films and pictures of Hitler and see the effects he had on people. It was very difficult to watch the footage of the Nuremberg trials and listen to the high ranking Nazi officials lie about their knowledge of the massive killings to which those same officials ordered.
Later we went to Zeppelin Field which was the Nazi Party Rally Grounds. This is where Hitler staged huge propaganda rallies which were meant to make him look good, gain power, and make the individual feel small. It also made the movement seem big because all the rallies had between 100 - 500 thousand people. You can’t imagine the size of this place. I tried to take pictures but it doesn’t have the same effect as being there. It is probably the size of 5 - 6 football fields at least. You can refer to the pictures I post but you will never understand the expanse.
After a brief tour around the city we had time on our own
Nazi Documentation Center
Hitler was so full of himself he wanted this to resemble the collesium of Rome. to explore. Of course Larry had to find a Mcdonalds for lunch…and I needed an Internet cafe because we can’t seem to get connected at the hotel….so it worked out for both of us. Unfortunately the internet didn’t work so we will have to wait till the next hotel to get everything posted.
Nuremburg is a medieval city complete with walls and moats. It is beautiful. Of course the city has expanded beyond the ancient walls but we all spent most of our time in the historic area. There was a farmer’s market and flea market combined. We had fun looking at everything. We even found a dried flower stand so mom would feel right at home. Of course I was interested in the bakery items…especially the breads. We tried to buy stamps to mail postcards and while I found a post office it was closed. They had a stamp machine but I had no idea what to buy so I bought nothing…I did take a picture of the post office for Roberta though.
I did find a Starbucks so I could use the internet and post our previous blogs. It was fun to see all the people
Nazi Parade Grounds
This is huge...you can't tell from the pictures. coming and going.
We returned to our hotel in the evening and had a traditional Bavarian dinner complete with sauerkraut, german potato salad, sausages, pea soup, and apple strudel. This hotel is on a farm and run by the family so all the food was made from their farm. They are so nice. There was a fire in the night and a World War II air raid siren went off in the night…it about scared us to death. It was hard to believe that some of our fellow travelers slept right through it.
Right now we are feeling disconnected from our friends and family because we can’t access the internet and it costs .99 per minute to make a phone call. So we are limiting our phone calls to very few. Hope you are enjoying the blog and pictures.
