Christmas has arrived early this year. As the doors were being unlocked, we were back at the Welt again for delivery day. Our scheduled pick-up time may have been at 0940, but we were there at 0759. This never gets old. First order of business was doing the paperwork in the newly renovated offices next to the Lounge. And there was quite a bit to be done. I wonder if anyone actually reads through all the documentation you're given. Everything was in order and we were given passes to the BMW museum, a voucher for a free engraved key chain and a ten Euro credit at the BMW gift shop. We were also offered passes for the Munich BMW factory tour but we declined. I told our clerk that we had already arranged to visit the ... read more

As mentioned previously my one and only complaint about the LetoMotel Munich (forgetting the cruise ship size tiny rooms) was the fact that breakfast was not included. A bakery occupied the same building but that appealed to neither of us. I had read online that some customers had gone to BMW Welt a day earlier than their scheduled pick up day simply to do the paperwork first and save themselves time on the big day. They were then permitted to go up to the Lounge to partake of the amenities high above the facility. Since the Welt was just two subway stops away we figured it was worth a try. Maybe we could even get the car a day earlier. It was worth a try. The location of the Olympia Zentrum U-Bahn stop couldn't be any ... read more

Things were going a bit too smoothly. In fact, we arrived in Munich a few minutes earlier than expected. Our hotel for two nights in Munch would be the LetoMotel München Nord just two U-Bahn stops from BMW Welt and across the highway from Olympic Stadium. Check-in time wasn't until 2pm and now we had almost 7 hours to kill. Going through passport control was not pleasant only because there were only two agents and a couple of hundred passengers waiting to go through. This took at least twenty minutes. The positive side being that our luggage was already on the conveyor belt when we got to baggage claim. As soon as we walked out of the customs area we were greeted by a huge crowd on the other side of the fence. I immediately spotted ... read more

Who would've thought we'd be doing another BMW European Delivery... Three years later the leases on both our 2015 MINI convertible and the 2015 BMW X1 were coming to an end. Both of us were retiring and our financial situation would be a bit more challenging. Back in December, on a whim I had test driven a Subaru Forester and was duly impressed. Many of the gizmos BMW offers on their luxury cars and with a much lower price. If they had been able to find a way to get us out of one or both of our leases a few months early this amazing trip would never have happened. With 5 months remaining on the X1 lease I started getting emails from BMW dealerships offering to get me out of my lease early. Reading the ... read more

From one happiest place on Earth to another, this next one purely for the adults, I headed off to Munich for Oktoberfest! I had started planning this when I went to Berlin and although it was always on my bucket list coming over here Berlin cemented that I definitely had to attend the world’s biggest beer festival so I had flights booked shortly after I returned home. It also looked as though I wasn’t going to be doing this trip solo as I’d been talking with Michael, who asked if he could join as he was also in the process of planning his own Euro adventure at the time. Due to the festival, we organised our beds in a hostel at a highly increased price in April/May otherwise we would have risked missing out or paying ... read more

Daneben waren noch andere Zuschauer, ... read more

When In Munich, perhaps it is time to visit the BMW Museum. I once owned a beautiful Z4 sports car, pictured below, named Brutus, for brut champagne.. Translated into English, this is Bavarian Motor Works, more commonly known as BMW, or by the nickname, "Beamer". Since 1916, the Company has been manufacturing automobiles, engines, and motorcycles. BMW also own the Mini Cooper brand, and is also the parent company of Rolls Royce. The motorcycles are produced under the name BMW Motorrad, and Husqvarna brands. BMW is known for both performance and luxury vehicles around the world. They are very popular in Hong Kong. And here in the US with yuppies and dinks. BMW's first motorcycle If you saw the movie, "Finding Forrester" sta... read more

Most of us think Munich means only the famous Oktoberfest whenever September rolls around. But this great German city, which I last visited in 1971, offers much more than just great beer. I spent the better part of a week here, but hardly recall much more than spending each day and evening at the enticing Oktoberfest grounds. So, here is quick shot at some Munich facts and figures, most of which you will either ignore or at a minimum, rolls your eyes into cabbage rolls. Munich is Germany's third largest city, after Berlin and Hamburg, with 1.3 million residents. Just so you know, the Oktoberfest started in 1812, and attracts over SIX million people in a three week period. That is more beer than Lake Tahoe (just kidding!). It is the biggest folk festival in the ... read more

I was last here 46 short years ago for the Oktoberfest. And no, I do not remember much, so don't ask. The train over here was simply smooth and uneventful. No complaints, other than our Amtrak should be at least 50% as fine as the trains here. Not in my lifetime. Smoke everywhere here in Munich. Not the horrible Napa smoke, the cancer killing type smoke of cigarettes. It could not be worse! None of the locals I asked could answer why so many people smoke. The lush, green, quiet countryside was only sparingly interrupted by cute little towns, and old Bavarian cities of yesteryear. Lots of corn, soy, farm livestock, and neatly kept farmhouses. The limited view of the mountains, the Alps, with their sharp, snow-covered peaks reminded me a little of Torres del Paine, ... read more
