Day 21: Thursday, December 17th, 2009
Venice, Italy to
Munich, Germany If I remember correctly (ha ha), this was a long, very scenic, driving day. According to the pictures, the only excitement was that I took a picture of Luna sleeping (and then nuked the picture because it was horrifically unflattering and I'm a nice person... sometimes). For some reason, our gang decided we needed to take a picture of the others nodding off on the bus. I liked my shot of Kent sleeping as we went by castles on the first day. I think my mug shot is one of the worse, I had my mouth wide open- there was probably drool involved. If someone sends me the pic, I might post it, we'll see. I do recall that we didn't get into Munich until evening. We dropped our bags off at the hotel (
Leonardo Hotel and Residenz Muenchen) and then headed to town.
As with all the other cities, the Christmas Markets were everywhere. Many stalls seem to carry the same items from town to town, but Munich had a unique stall that we hadn't seen yet- you could get a hot cup of cider or hot wine in a Munich Christmas
2009 mug (I guess Vienna also had a mug but I missed that.) So, we all bellied up to the bar and bought one. Being the boring person that I am, I had the hot cider. It tasted like hot potpourri and unfortunately I let this be known before I tried pushing it off on the others in the group. I ended up chugging it when it was cool to get it over with, got a cool mug out of it though.
While we were all sipping our air fresheners, we were waiting by the
New Town Hall for the
Glockenspiel (clock) to strike on the hour. This clock had little wooden figurines all over it that were supposed to act out a battle on the hour. The hour came, the bells chimed, all us tourists stood staring up, and that was it. Finally, one of the ladies in one of the Christmas stalls told us that it wasn't going to go off. She said it goes off only at Noon. Bummer.
We then headed over to the the
Frauenkirche (Cathederal of Our Blessed Lady) to see "Satan's footprint". To sum up the story: Big S got mad and slammed his foot down and left an
imprint. Up next was
Feldherrnhalle plaza. We were getting hungry at that point so we stopped by the famous
Hofbrauhaus. I think everyone else ordered the "Knuckle plate" (which is actually the knee joint of a pig) and I went all crazy and ordered a salad with turkey strips on it. Sigh.
After dinner, there was one more church we wanted to see, but we couldn't figure out how to get into, so we wrapped it up and headed back to the meeting point where the coach soon met us to take us back to the hotel. So, I can say I've been to Munich, but I don't think I can say I've experienced it.

Oh Christmas.
I wish I had been with you at all the Christmas stalls. You know how I am about Christmas. Love, Love, Love it! But you probably would have wanted to kill me after a while because I would have wanted to look at, and experience it all.
