Its been raining for days!! But guess what, I don't care because it doesn't rain in the beer tents! 😊 That's right, I've finally made it to the homeland, the biggest, bestest party in the world, Oktoberfest!! My hotel ended up being about a 5 min walk from the fairgrounds which is key when it's pouring rain! I got into munich and literally dropped my bags off and went right to the party! I had no idea that it was this huge carnival as well! I'm talking first class rides and roller coasters and of course so many brats (1 meter bratwurst!), pretzels, and crazy gingerbread cookie hearts that people wore around their necks. My favorite were the guys my age wearing a heart as big as their entire torso! Since it was pouring rain, I went straight for the first tent, Lowenbrau! When I walked in, I started laughing out loud! Wow this was soooo great! There's a band in the middle cranking out all you favorite 1970 american sing along songs and about half of the crowd is singing and dancing on their tables! I'd have to say - good time FUN Central!! I found a seat with two
kiwi boys who were very fun and nice! After one XL beer we got kicked off our table because we didn't have a reservation! You can't get a beer unless you have a seat, so I approached a table of businessmen speaking english and wormed my way in via Packer references! As a matter of fact, anyone that I've met from the US I leave with a "remember me when the Pack goes to the Superbowl this year"...weeks ago they laughed, but finally I'm getting some buy in!
Next we went over to the "tourist" tent since the kiwis knew about the Pig Pen - a spot in front of the band with standing room only, but no reservation needed! We ended up hopping the pig pen fence and meeting tons more kiwis and aussies, including my new friends Asha and Lauren, whom I hung out with in prague later! I had an absolute blast just singing, dancing, and meeting tons of randoms! Also met my favorite boy so far, Nickolas, who was a tall blonde local german boy! Turns out he was a physics major and has bookshelves full of books like quantum mechanics and theory of nuclei
particle spin! I think F said it best - two nerds meeting in the night 😊 - so fun! I ended up spending the next day with him too, chatting about music, books, and science! He had to leave town for a birthday party in austria (man these europeans do it right!) So I wandered around munich for a few hours then headed back to the Pig Pen! Same awesomely fun times just drinking huge beers and wandering around meeting people! Also loved my snack that day - garlic cheesy bread with salami and peppercinis! YUMBA!!!! That night I spent most of my time with a group of guys from san diego talking about....hahahah the packers beating the chargers!! Loving it! My last day it was stilllllll pouring rain, so I went to the museum of modern art, Pinkothteka or something like that. Its funny, when I leave a city, I leave all my maps, tickets, and guidebook pages behind (if it lightens my load even 8oz I'm on it!) So I don't remember the names of lots of things! Anyways, the museum was very interesting - my favorite was a three story rotating display of furniture .... weird! There
See, I went somewhere besides the beer tent!
was also an amazing gallery of photographs of chinese people in everyday life - super interesting! The standout of the day was a mini- mini Cooper car in the hallway. I was like, is that art? When i went over to it, it was titled "abandoned" and when I looked in the mini car, there was a mini plastic baby in the backseat! WHAT?!?!?
Sorry not too many Munich pictures - it was pouring rain for 3 1/2 of the 4 days I was there and the rest of the time I was too busy meeting crazy people at Oktoberfest!
