We woke early to catch the 10:30 train to Garmisch. The train ride was really beautiful and skirted around the german alps to eventually arrive in Garmisch right near the tallest mountain in Germany. We both immeadiately commented on how beautiful Garmisch is, mountains surround the villages and the houses are a cool bavarian austrian style. We met kim at the station and it was awesome seeing her again after almost a year since the last time. Kim showed us to the tourist center where we found a sweet little bed and breakfast for 20 euro a night. The owners were an older german couple that spoke very little english but were very friendly and helpful. We dropped our stuff there and walked all over the city eating some nice food at a little cafeteria. ... read more

Todays target: Zugspitze! Yesterday we tried to figure out which one of the mountains was Zugspitze, the highest point in Germany. Today we decided to be sure to see it and after an enormous breakfast (again!) we made plans to drive to Eibsee, where it is said to be the best view of Zugspitze. Eibsee is a mountain lake about 9 km southwest from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The lake is over 3 km long, about 560 meters wide and in average 12 meters deep. At deepest it is 35,4 meters! The water is clear and has a beautiful light blue color. There are a few small islands in the lake, that look like the coral islands in the Caribbean Sea! I think it is the limestone that dyes the clear water white around the islands. With the ... read more

Hello! June 15, 2007 a group of four exchange students of Technische Universität Darmstadt (3 Finns & 1 American) rented a car and drove down to southern Germany to spend a long weekend near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Now after visiting the place I can tell it is a great place to spend a summer holiday - especially if you like outdoors activities like hiking, biking, swimming or mountaining climb. It takes about 4-5 hours to drive down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen from Darmstadt. We stayed on autobahns and trusted our way to the Navigator. "She" said to follow first the autobahn A5, then A6 to Heilbronn, then A81 to Stuttgart, then A8 towards München and finally A95 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Estimated travelling time: 4 hours and some minutes. All went well, except for we got stuck for 2 hours on the ... read more

Happy Holidays to all. We started our Christmas morning in Salzburg with a small but fun celebration then drove the 112 kilometers to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It was very cold and there was ice and frost on everything we saw making everything white. It was like driving through a Christmas card. We had Christmas dinner at Reindl, a traditional Bavarian restaurant. When we emerged it was snowing! A white Christmas after all. We are staying in a fantastic hotel with a view of the Zugspritz, the tallest mountain in Bavaria at 3000 meters. You do the math. We woke up to the view in the picture you see here. Wow! We headed out in the car to find some castles and within an hour we found two. Hogenshshalokslfjkdluu Castle (I forgot how to spell that one) and Neushwanstein ... read more

Well, I am now on the plane to Johannesburg. Fourteen hours of travelling to go before I finally reach Africa. Germany was originally added to my itinerary as a layover, I didn't chose to go and I wasn't very excited about it until I found the Bavarian Alps a couple of weeks before I left. Even then I had trouble trouble convincing myself to be excited. Was I ever wrong....... Germany was a complete whirlwind. I loved every minute there. There was so much sychronicity in my time there, it was unbelievable. Five days of divine timing. Jordan and I really wanted to go to this place called Partnach Gorge. We headed over there a couple of days ago only to find I did not bring any Euro's again (I must start remembering this money thing). ... read more

Holy smokes....... it feels like this day lasted a week. It was very eventful. We got off the plane in Frankfurt with no plans at all. We knew we wanted to get to the mountains but I didn't know what that looked like yet. Hadn't decided if we were going to take a train, a plane, a bus, a car (click our heels together) - I thought I would decide when we got here. It's been about 24 hours "on the road" so far and I haven't really slept that much yet. We've been to Seattle, Texas and Germany today. So we get off the plane and the first strange thing is that people smoke inside the airport. They have smoking "stations". It is 7:00 am German time, which is 10:00 pm at home and my ... read more

Watching the scenery go by as I sat on a bus with 21 Americans, 2 Germans, and 2 Russians, I thought about all the things I love about Germany. Everything outside my window looked so green, and it reminded me of the sensible laws Germans have to do their share in protecting the environment. First of all, everyone recycles. You have to, it’s the law. If you try to dispose of a huge bag of recyclable trash, you’ll get a fine, and the trash men will leave your trash behind. That’s right, if you don’t recycle all of your waste is going to pile up in your yard, and you’ll have to look at it everyday, so you better start recycling. And they recycle everything, including milk cartons and juice boxes. If it’s packaging, they recycle ... read more

A Tale Of Two Germany’s Like any classic fairytale Germany’s story includes hero’s, dark villains, dramatic scenery and a hopeful ending. It is a land of majestic castles surrounded by enchanted forests and quaint villages. A story that also includes mad kings, bleak times and sinister rulers. Before we get too poetic or educational on you, we just want to add…WE LOVE GERMANY (we may have been influenced by the large portions of the best food we’ve had in Europe. A great example of one of Germany’s charming villages is Garmisch. We wanted to be sure to visit it for sentimental reasons. Back in the dark ages, the US government gave J’s family a free trip to Germany. Well, okay… the Army had a few strings attached. J’s dad was stationed in Germany for 3 years. ... read more

It was another great weekend (July 22-24) for us and a chance for me to visit another part of Germany that I had not been to before. This time it was Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Kate had been there before on a work related matter but this time it was much more pleasant experience. We went down to Garmisch to attend a marriage enrichment seminar put on by the army’s chaplain office here in Ansbach. The seminar was held at the brand new military R&R hotel (Edelweiss Lodge & Resort) located in Garmisch. Beautiful mountains and meadows surround the Edelweiss Resort. The room, facilities and meals were outstanding. Buffet style breakfast and dinner with a desert bar to die for. This was not a weekend to even hint of thinking about dieting. The seminar was conducted by the senior ... read more
