Garmish-Partenkirchen We experience yet another jewel as we spend some time in the Bavarian Alps. A special Thanks to Dan and Marianne for giving us some valuable travel advice for this leg of our trip. Upon your recommendation and assistance, we stay at the Forsthaus Hotel in Oberau in lieu of going into the Garmish area. The Forsthaus Hotel is located directly across the street from the train station in Oberau and proves to be a remarkable place to stay. The place is run by Bruce and Lisa. These are two remarkable hosts. Each morning, they come down and visit with the guest and make great conversation and offer advice about the local area. We really enjoyed our stay in the Forsthaus and would recommend this friendly little place to anyone. Our original game plan was ... read more

Another enormous gap and now I realise that if I continue at this rate I´ll only do another three or five entries by the end of the trip. That´s no good. Split So. After checking into the hostel in Split, we had a bit of a chill day. Kathleena decided she was going to go shopping, and we walked around and around the old town. There are narrow cobbled streets, lots of marble, and some very, very old buildings. It´s right on the sea, but the sea isn´t quite as nice as Dubrovnik. The reason for Split being a big tourist draw is that it´s the site of Diocletian´s palace, which is not so much one building as a neighbourhood. It´s surrounded by tall walls, outside of which is the old town. Kathleena got a dress ... read more

Soos julle uit die titel kan aflei, om die plek se naam uit te spreek is nie so maklik nie, en gewone duitsers verstaan nie as mens 'n gewone suid- Afrikaner dit uitspreek soos ek dit verstaan nie Anycase, so were all on the bus and the first thing you notice is that all the local people are dressed for ... read more

Wow- it's been a while since the last update! And I've had 2 more trips since then! London and Vienna... which were both great. The Vienna trip was a solo trip and I have never been so cold in my life! It was a different cold than I had ever experienced before: a biting, goes straight to your bones kinda cold. But what a beautiful city. The buildings are all so grand and ornate. I got in on a Friday afternoon fairly early, found my hotel, and headed out. Since I was by myself I decided I could splurge a bit and go for a single WITH a bathroom :) Great idea in the end of course! Well, the first day I ended up going to the Hofburg Palace and going to the exhibit about "Sisi". ... read more

We spent Thanksgiving Day here in Mannheim (well, Weinheim actually but close enough) with our friends. There turned out to be about 15 of us for dinner so it was a really nice sized group. Originally I had planned on having Thanksgiving dinner at our apartment but our group soon outgrew our apartment so my friend Catherine volunteered to have it at her house (that's where the Weinheim part comes in) but I still made the turkey and the stuffing. Friday, November 27th The next day (the 27th, which is where the blog really starts) Catherine and Adam, Megan and Joel, and Matt and I all drove down to Garmisch for some skiing for the weekend. As always, I'll tell you all about our B&B...especially because this was another great find for us! Haus Lilly is ... read more

At the beginning of the week I had two days off. I decided for one of the days to head to the Neuschwanstein castle, which is the one that Disney World modeled the Cinderella castle after. It was a beautiful day for the tour because it was sunny and warmer than it has been. The boys that I went with were a lot of fun too. Well, we went with the tour with the hotel because employees can hop on for free if there are openings. So we got free transportation, and ended up getting free admission inside! The outside is 100 times more impressive than the inside because the castle actually was not completed. But the scenery around the castle is absolutely stunning. It's up on a hill so you can look out on ... read more

Well, it's only the middle of October and it's already SNOWING. I can't believe it! I have never seen snow this early into the year before. It is beautiful though. It's so cloudy surrounding the mountains that you can't see very high up though. It is also QUITE cold. This weekend I had two days off. I actually ended up not doing much. Saturday night a group of us went to a nearby town on the train to go to this cool restaurant. It was traditional Bavarian food: I had roasted chicken, creamy cauliflower, and this tasty noodley thing. It was excellent. The cool thing is you can get a little tiny mini keg for your table. And I was told that it's one of the best beers in this area and they brew it ... read more

I have to say this town is so relaxing and quaint. A good way to gather your thoughts. I find the Bavarian part of Germany a little more friendly than the north part. While I was fascinated with the history and influx of construction and beautiful architecture in Berlin, I found this part of Germany and little less rough around the edges. I had dinner with a young man from Nurnberg, who spoke little English, but we managed an interesting conversation and he taught me a few simple German words. Apparently what I translated from his poor English, he skipped high school and went to a university, so he missed out on the plentiful English lessons in H.S. Fascinating! I would have liked to skip high school, too. Although, things may have been lost in translation, ... read more

Just a quick update. I will write more details later. It may be awhile before I can upload pictures. A lot of the Internet cafes don't give access to a computer-just a screen with the Internet. So that sucks. I have been taking them like crazy. Berlin was so fun...i saw so many things. I like that city. There is such a mix of different cultures and architecture to create a city that is alive with history and new modern hopes. Now, I am relaxing in Garmisch! What an amazingly beautiful town. It literally takes your breath away. It puts Colorado to shame. Actually, it is like a mix of the Rocky mountains and the Smoky mountains, which high snow-capped peaks with rolling green hills and trees. It is like Colorado meets Tennessee with a dash ... read more

Woke to the old german couple waking us for breakfast at 8:30 am. We were both a big hung-over and I was still angry about the camera but not much I could do at this point I suppose. We had breakfast which consisted of rolls and various deli meats along with a cup of coffee and a hard boiled egg. Not the most extravagant of breakfasts but food all the same. After eating we stashed out backpacks along the side of the bed and breakfast and headed off to do a bit of hiking. We took a bus to the olypmic stadium stop and started walking to the right as we were directed by kim. Turns out we were supposed to follow the stadium however, rather than continue going right (girls and directions?!?). It ended ... read more
