Black Forest (Schwarzwald in German) conjures up images of fairy tales and stories of princes, princesses, ogres, mountains, rivers, mists and tall trees. Our trip was all of this except for the ogres ! This was our first proper vacation within Germany (before this we had done day trips to Cologne and Russelsheim) and undertaken during Easter break. Again a hurriedly planned trip at last minute. Kids were of course excited to be on the ICE DB train and they were further elated to get gifts from DB in the train (miniature DB trains, puzzles, drawings etc). Our pitstop was dependent on where we got hotel bookings. We were in luck to get a booking at the Roserhof guesthouse in Gengenbach. The owner Janina was very helpful and more importantly English speaking ! Gengenbach is a ... read more

Breakfast was included again so we made sure to eat well before we set off up the hill to Triberg Falls. The path is STEEP!! Although this is really a bit of a tourist town, it is still really lovely and the falls are definitely worth the visit. They cascade down four large sections, falling about 160m altogether. This town also boasts the first hydro-electric power turbines in Germany and consequentially had electric street lights in the late 1800’s well before any other towns. After wearing ourselves out climbing the hill, we came back down to the playground at the bottom. It had a really great timber seat where parents can watch the kids playing. Then it was into town to see the local specialty - Cuckoo clocks. There are some truly amazing carved clocks, from ... read more

As we had breakfast included with our hotel, we loaded up with eggs and fruit, cereal and everything else we could eat. Then we packed up and headed for Marienburg Fortress which is the original castle and fortress for the Prince-Bishops (the same ones that had the city Residenz built). We tried to go through fortifications up the hill but the path was under repair so we went the long way around. This turned out to be good because it was steep enough for us! At the top of the hill the fortress is just that – a series of enormous walls built to make sure anyone attacking would suffer catastrophic losses before they ever broke through. Without doubt, it offers the best views of Wurzburg. It also has some great history within the castle keep. ... read more

Today is the day we get our cuckoo clock! We had planned to leave by 7:00, giving us ample time to drive to Germany and other explorations on the way back. We both had such a terrible sleep, that we opted for an extra hour in bed and so we left around 8:30 instead. A few minutes later, we were out on the open road, and 90 minutes later we were in historic, quaint Triberg. Our first stop, the Original World's Largest Cuckoo Clock. We loved this place when we were there a few years ago, and the lady there spent so much time explaining how things worked and showing us around the house-sized cuckoo clock. Turns out it was her father-in-law who had originally built it. We always wished we had bought a clock when ... read more

The Black Forest Days:3 We traveled to The Black Forest in early October. It was a great trip for the parents and the kids! Here is our itinerary Day 1 •Mummelsee Lake •Glass Factory, Wolfach After a late start, we headed out on our "adventure" as we called it around 11 am. We drove to Baden-Baden to get on the Romantic Road (B500). The drive on B500 is for the grownups - the views are incredible. Plug in a video and enjoy the peace & quiet and incredible beauty of the Black Forest. We stopped at Lake Mummelsee for lunch and our first "adventure" as we called each activity. There is an indoor restaurant with outdoor seating or you can buy sandwiches from the shop below. After lunch, we rented a paddleboat for €4 for 30 ... read more

Here we are again. It's now Wednesday evening and we are still feeling the jet lag. This morning after checkout from the Hotel Pfaff, Vanda and I were off to see the highest waterfall in Germany. It was located just across the street from the hotel, a nice uphill walk. The scenery was beautiful, very green, lush and misty, and it was absolutely worth the free admission. Due to time constraints, we chose not to hike to the very top. After the waterfall we had a big decision to make - visit the Triberg city museum or go to Furtwangen and visit the German Clock Museum (Deutsches Uhrenmuseum). Why was this a big decision? Because I wanted to buy a cuckoo clock in the worst way and Vanda wasn't nearly as keen on the idea. We ... read more

Flight to Zurich, Switzerland Good evening one and all and welcome once again to the blog of the Happy Wonders - Vanda and Rob. It is currently 9:35 Central European Time September 7 for Vanda and me - six hours earlier for you on the East coast and earlier yet for those further west. Monday, Labor Day, September 6, started early for your author as his dear wife rousted him from a deep slumber so that he could go on-line to check in and get the boarding passes, mow his grass and finish last minute packing. Of course, true to form, Vanda was also mowing her lawn and rushing to get all the last minute details completed. Needless to say, by 11:45 we were on the way to Dulles and arrived with enough time to have ... read more

We decided to leave Fussen early so we could drive along Lake Constance on the way to the Black Forest. We stopped just outside of Lindau for breakfast/brunch. Once we were fuelled we put Konstanz into our GPS (Karen - Richie’s other woman) and hit the road until she took us to a ferry stop! We decided to save our pennies and as we weren’t in a rush we continued driving along the lake instead of getting the ferry. It was a lovely drive! The lake is massive! There’s a bike ride all the way around which we’d like to do one day (just another thing on the list!). We stopped in a small town near the end of the lake (Bodman-Ludwigshafen) to stretch our legs and take in the view. We nearly had to call ... read more
