Once upon a time there was a Price and a Princess...Black Forest (Schwarzwald in German) conjures up images of fairy tales and stories of princes, princesses, ogres, mountains, rivers, mists and tall trees. Our trip was all of this except for the ogres !
This was our first proper vacation within Germany (before this we had done day trips to Cologne and Russelsheim) and undertaken during Easter break. Again a hurriedly planned trip at last minute.
Kids were of course excited to be on the ICE DB train and they were further elated to get gifts from DB in the train (miniature DB trains, puzzles, drawings etc).
Our pitstop was dependent on where we got hotel bookings. We were in luck to get a booking at the Roserhof guesthouse in Gengenbach. The owner Janina was very helpful and more importantly English speaking ! Gengenbach is a small picturesque village and that became our pitstop. It was pleasant to walk through the town every day during our stay there.
Roserhof have vineyards and apple orchards. We got apple juice and wines at dirt cheap
The vineyards - completely unplanned but beautiful day we had..prices. The breakfast spread was decent with the kids loving the freshly made lightly charred scrambled eggs !
On our first day, we visited Frieburg and walked around the town. It was a sunny day and a good start to the trip. We navigated our way to search for a famous brewery, Feierling and spent a relaxing time there.
The true black forest feeling was when we visited Triberg, the town famous for cuckoo clocks. We did a short hike to the highest waterfalls in Germany and loved it. Of course we adults had to have the famous Black forest pastry with tons of Kirsch (alcohol from cherries) in it. We had the authentic one from Café Schaefer, passed on from the original inventor of the cake.
Our trip to Feldberg was disappointing. Feldberg is a ski resort and we had hoped to see snow, up close and personal. Unfortunately the weather played spoilsport. It was raining, cold and misty. It was closed and we just managed to take some pictures in the gift shop.
Feldberg - had to be happy with only posing due to the rain On the last day, we did a short climb in the vineyards near the hotel. It was amazing to be there when the rains, the clouds and the sun were taking turns to bless us. We went beyond the vineyards and were amidst the famous tall pine trees. Views of the village from there were spectacular.
Overall a very relaxed trip with a magical feel to it. In hindsight, this trip just whetted our appetite to travel. It was just a precursor to a longer trip that we did to Switzerland and Italy later in the year. In fact when traveling to Switzerland we were so near the Black Forest towns and reminisced about this first memorial vacation within Germany !
