Its strange to think that after 3 months in Germany I have now spent just over 1% of my life here. Granted that perhaps seems not so much, however it differs slightly from the 4 days that our original plans had us staying. So today is the last day, so much has happened since we arrived in May. The World Cup, a month long festival in every village, city and town in the country. Trips to Medieval Castles and Towns, A weekend in Paris, A week in Spain, our own little apartment, a music festival, beer gardens, bars, nightclubs, restaurants. Its been a great time. Germany is an interesting country, one that is rich in history both of the good and bad variety. This town for example has a history dating back around 1,500 years. Each ... read more

Its funny, the people you meet. While waiting with great anticipation and apprehension for the commencement of the Australia vs. Japan match (all those weeks ago), we were approached by a man wearing an official Australian Soccer shirt and carrying a hand-sewn Australian flag. "Are you Australian?" he asked in English with a German accent. "Yes" we answered. "True Blue?" he enquired. "Most definiteley". This guy was Alex, and over the next couple of hours we came to discover that he was half Australian, half German and that his hand sewn flag was stolen during a political protest in Canberra and that altought he was originally from Tübingen he was there at that time to organise a Poltical-Musical festival. 16,000 people he assured me, in the very same parl where the World Cup screen was. The past few days in Tübingen have been relatively quiet, for one reason in particular: No Football. Its been so strange I feel like I have lost a shoe. The world cup started with 3 games every single day, what bliss, and then went down to 2 per day, still very tidy. But in between the round of 16 of the Quarter Finals there are two whole days where neither a football is kicked nor a shin is grabbed in mock horror and pain at a foul that did not occur. Tomorrow though will make up for that because Germany plays, and that always means goodtimes. Unless they lose. Hopefully that doesn't happen. One interesting thing that has occured is I recieved this message from a fellow called Tim in response to the entry "Stuttgart": Hi ... read more

Berlin, Berlin. We're going to Berlin! Thats what the Germans chant after each victory, and with each victory they seem to believe it more and more. And so they should; they are playing fantastic football with the likes of Klose and Podoloski, lighting up the nation. Each time I walked admidst the jubilant German fans, I thought, well, perhaps Australia is also bound for Berlin. Not something you would say aloud, but if we can score 3 goals in the final 8 minutes against Japan then anything is possible right? Well anything is possible as the last week has proven: On Thursday we (just) caught the train to Stuttgart and were met by some very familiar faces outside the Stuttgart Station, Paul and Daniella Mirabella. It was quite an odd thing to catch up with ... read more

I have named this entry Stuttgart as it is where we will be heading tomorrow for the Australia vs Croatia game. As mentioned by Kristian in his last entry, he is now again admidst the beautiful surrounds of Montreal and will soon be catching up with Chelsea in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Hopefully he will post some photo's from his adventures up here, although he may not because of an incident the other night after a party at a students residence when he fell off his bike (again), twice. After the first fall two mexican guys ran up to see if he was okay and said "Man are you okay, you got like two heads", referring to the bump that was also quite visible. Then about 3 minutes later, immeadiately after Pudd uttered the words "I can't believe ... read more

Hello all. I have not written in a while but furtunatly John has so at least you all know where we are at. Life in Tübingen is good. We spend alot of our time over here watching the soccer ( i refuse to call it football) from the beer garden. John and I orderd an AFL footy off e-bay the other week and it got delivered a few days ago. So in between soccer matchs we usually have a kick, good times. Although a few days ago I kicked it into the lake next to the park and in my hast forgot to take out my wallet, mobile phone before i slipped and fell in. Good news is after drying it out it still works. I also have some big news. Im going back to Canada. ... read more

Well the World Cup is well and truly underway. Kristian, Anja and myself travelled to Munich for the opening match and, apart from being one of Germany's major cities anyway, was absolutely packed full of German football fans. The game was against Costa Rica and for every 10,000 German we saw 1 or 2 Costa Ricians. The weather up until that exact day had been less than perfect, infact in was downright cold but as if on cue it dramatically changed the day the world cup started. So bathed in sunshine we sailed down the autobahn towards Munich. Upon arriving we dropped the car at Sabine's house (she was at the time powerinf through a medical physiology exam) and caught the U-Bahn in to the city centre. People everywhere. We went to the English gartens for ... read more

Well, yesterday we had the great pleasure of seeing the mighty Socceroos...sorry QANTAS Socceroos play against the might of Liechtenstein. Althought the score was 3:1, Australia scored all 4 goals. There must have been atleast 1,000 Aussies there which was kinda weird because Ulm is such a small town. Of the ones we talked to there seemed to be a fairly even mix of those who live in Germany, those who are backpacking around Europe and those who were there just the World Cup. Kristian and I donned some green and gold face paint, and bought some Aussie flags. Anja became an honourary Australia for the game and even let me paint a small Aussie flag on her cheek. She was a bit confused about the whole Jumbuck in a Tuckerbag thing though. Actually as a ... read more

Hello all, At the moment we are tstaying with Anja's parents in Heidenheim, a village about 2 hours drive from Tübingen. Yesterday we got our first real taste of the World Cup, and in particular Australia's involvement in it, when The Socceroos played Holland. As many of you may have heard the Dutch accused us of being a bit too rough, and actually the commentator mentioned something about "Aussie Rules Football" duting the broadcast, perhaps drawing comparisons to that game. True they did play hard but perhaps it is hard for them to do anything less than try their hardest when they are playing such an established team. It was great that they drew. The commentator also said that Australia was not just at the World Cup to make up the numbers which is encouraging, but ... read more

Well life in Tübingen has definatly slowed down a bit which is good. We set a fairly decent pace from the outset of the trip and was going to be hard to continue that all the way through. So yeah i am actually having days in a row where we are not having a massive night. That being said, 2 nights ago we went out for a big night to a place John and Anja went to while I was in Münich with Chelsea. One of the favorite forms of transport for all the uni students here are bikes. Bikes everywhere. john picked up one the other day, old but in good nick for 30 euro. Nice!. Anyway we all rode off to the pub, i borrowed a bike off one of Anjas mates. Now from ... read more
