Today we finally arrived in Heidelberg to a nice camping spot near the Rhine.
We drove down the Rhine from our previous camping ground and stopped at a town called Rodesheim. Along the way we saw some really nice scenery and heaps of castles - it seems there was a castle for every village. We stopped at Rodesheim as it looked like a nice town. We went to a castle there which had been converted into a wine museum. We took the audio tour and it was fascinating. They had all sorts of equipment for the making of wine, right back to the Roman empires reign. They had heaps of different wine glasses and goblets dating right back to 5000 years ago. It seems that people did a lot of drinking games even centuries ago - there were some glasses that had lines in them (the game was to drink to the line, otherwise you had to drink the whole glass and start the game again), there were glasses made of funny shapes (pigs, cows etc) - the game was to drink the wine without spilling the wine, there’s not many of those glasses left now as the people got pretty

lively and many glasses were smashed.
After visiting a few souvenir shops we headed onto Heidelberg - and believe or not, we didn’t even get lost! I think I’m getting a bit better at reading the map. Heidelberg is a lovely town that Daniel really likes as it’s hard to get lost in. It has nice cobblestone streets and a nice village feel (even though it’s quite big). We went up to the Schloss Heidelberg Castle and had a look around there - the castle is massive! The grounds stretch for miles with a beautiful outlook over Heidelberg. The castle itself is in a bit of a ruin but the majority of it is still standing with some amazing stone carvings. I imagine it would have been quite a sight in its original condition. I almost forgot - we had to climb more stairs to get to this castle - 310 steps - I think they like stairs around here!
After touring around the city a bit we went out for dinner. Daniel wanted to try a traditional German meal - I’m not quite sure he got it, but he did get sausages and a pretzel with beer.
