Trier Cathedral
Trier Cathedral is a very dominating building in central Trier. Trier and Baden-Baden
Before we go on trips we usually try to gather some information about the destination. We look through a travel guidebook, we check out a few websites that sometimes list interesting places that are easily overlooked and we have a few books that have sites worth visiting from all over the world. One of the things we check out is if there are any world heritage sites where we are going. We don't visit every single world heritage site, some are not interesting for us or become repetitive, but the interesting ones we try to include in our journey.
By coincidence this blog entry is about two cities that both have been recognised by UNESCO for having important cultural heritage worthy of being included on the world heritage list. In Trier there are remains from the Roman Empire and the cathedral and a church that are listed. In Baden-Baden it is various buildings connected with the city's history as a spa and resort town.
Well to be honest when we decided to visit Baden-Baden it wasn't mainly the world heritage status that attracted us. It was that the name

Trier Cathedral from another side Baden-Baden sounds so funny…
Trier Before we left on this trip we knew only very little about the city Trier. But we are very happy we went there because it is a place worth visiting.

Trier Cathedral - It is a very dominating building in central Trier. As mentioned above, it is a world heritage site.
=>
Karl Marx House - Karl Marx was born in Trier and the house he was born in is today a museum. We weren't interested in the museum so we didn't go in. But since we walked by it we felt we had to take a photo and include it in the blog.
=> Karl Marx crosswalk - Just around the corner from Karl Marx House there are two crosswalks. At that crosswalk the "green man" and the "red man" signals have been replaced with portraits of Karl Marx on one of them and his wife, Jenny Marx, on the other.
=>
Porta Nigra - Porta Nigra was a city gate built during the Roman era. The size of the gate is impressive. It is hard to see in the photos how gigantic it really is. Porta Nigra is
Archway
Archway in Trier Cathedral one of the world heritage listed buildings in Trier.

Electoral Palace - We have said it before, it feels like almost every town in Germany has at least one palace or one castle. Most of the times we didn't bother visiting them. We would just get castle and palace fatigue if we had tried. But the Electoral Palace in Trier at least made it into the blog.
=>
Trier Imperial Baths - Trier Imperial Baths is another of the world heritage listed buildings in Trier. It is the remains of a very large bath facility from the Roman era. It was great to see the crumbling walls of this once majestic bath house. But what really made the visit fun was to walk through the maze of paths and corridors that are underground.
20¤C+M+B+22 Before we continue we would like to write about something we have not come across before -
Chalking the door. In some towns in Germany we noticed that people had written 20¤C+M+B+22, or slight variations thereof, on the doors to their homes. It turns out that this is a Christmas tradition among Roman Catholics and some other faiths.
Baden-Baden When
Central Trier
Buildings in central Trier we planned this trip in Germany one of the priorities was to visit Baden-Baden. We knew that it is one of the big classical spa towns in Europe. When we travelled in
Czech Republic in 2013 we visited two other similar style spa towns and found that we really enjoyed it there. It was the combination of slow and relaxed pace, enjoyable environment, nice parks and beautiful buildings and the feeling of getting warped back into the turn of the century and the
Belle Époque that we liked.
Well, we liked it in 2013 and now in 2022 we felt more than ready to once again make a time travel and revisit the Belle Époque.

The Kurhaus and Casino - a spa and casino complex from the 19th century.
=>
Trinkhalle - a pump house which is part of the Kurhaus complex.
=> Fettquelle - a small fountain with mineral water directly from the source. It sounds better than it is though. There was a sign there saying that you should not drink the water.
=>
Friedrichbad - This is one of the classical spas in Baden-Baden. The spa is "textile free", which means you don't wear any swimsuit. Yes, it
Central Trier
Central Trier is nice to walk around in is shared area for all visitors and it is "free willy", "full frontal nudity", "the full monty", or whatever you want to call it, in every pool and in the steam rooms and saunas. If you have a problem with nudity, your own and/or others, avoid this place. We don't have any problem with being butt-naked as long as everybody else also is nude. So we went to Friedrichbad and can tell you all that we liked the place.
Baden-Baden is not far from the French border and just across the border is the French city Strasbourg. We have never been to Strasbourg so we decided to go there for a day. We will write about that in the next blog entry.
