Monday morning Florent and I drove to Louviers, met his mom at her house, and then headed on to a 'parc des animaux', a park/fenced in forest area about 45 minutes from Louviers. We arrived, unlocked the gate, and entered. The moment we were inside we were greeted by five men with walking sticks apparently walking around looking for something. They all had very focused and determined looks on their faces as they trudged through the forest in our irection. A wiry guy who seemed to be the leader of the gang gave us instructions in a brusque rapid French that I did not completely understand. We drove ahead on the rough road until we arrived at a set of shacks/sheds and parked. There was a pen nearby with a dozen or so wild pigs. ... read more

It has been an interesting ride thus far here in France. About a month ago I got an email from Jean-Luc, the manager of the Bois-Guillaume Woodchucks, a team competing in the Nationale 1 league in France. Bois-Guillaume is a suberb of Rouen, a city about 100 kilometers west of Paris in the Normandy region. So I received this email, a formal invite to come spend two months playing for the Woodchucks. The contract ends mid-may, at which point I will fly to Lithuania where I will spend the rest of the summer. I arrive in Lithuania just in time to get ready for the European Championship 2007, which Kaunas Lituanica (my team) will be playing in, which will be in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands. But I am getting ahead of the story. At the moment ... read more

Bonjour, Everything is still well with me here in Rouen and I hope the same goes for all of you back home. I finally started classes last week and I must say that I do not enjoy having all three hour long classes; they feel like they go on forever, but oh well that’s how they do it here. The big difference between classes here and classes at home is that the French students all talk during the lectures. They have conversations with each other( which are not relevant to the lecture) and they don’t even whisper it is at a pretty normal volume. Some of my professors have very thick French accents and although they classes are in English I find it very difficult to concentrate and understand the professors with all the background noise. ... read more

Joyeux Dimanche! Sundays are quickly becoming my favorite time to be in France because of the markets. Last Sunday we went into town to check out the outdoor market and we went back today because it is such a fun, French experience- plus the price for fruit, bread, etc. is pretty cheap! The vendors have all kinds of food, but there are also stands that sell clothes, antiques, scarves and other things. It was a really lovely day this morning- sunny and not too cold. The area surrounding the market was also really busy with people sitting outside at cafes, having a glass of wine or "cafe au lait." Part of the reason why I love the market so much is just seeing people of all ages walking around, chatting with each other, giving the "bises"- ... read more

Hello Everyone!!!! Well I made it to France safe and sound and so far I am LOVING it!!! I started this travel journal online because I thought it would be a good way to keep in touch and let you know what I am up to- so if you are interested you can check in as you wish and I will update it as I go along. Anyway.... as I was saying it is great here. I am going to a school called ESC Rouen in Rouen, France. Rouen has a population of about 500,000 people (including surrounding areas) but it doesn't seem that big. (200,000 right in the city of Rouen) It is very cute- and I LOVE all the street side crepe stands!!! My actual campus and rez are just a few minutes outside ... read more

Bounjour tout le monde! I have arrived in France and I am slowly settling in and getting used to living here. So far I am really enjoying it. The town of Rouen is very "charmant." The pictures that I am going to post are from downtown Rouen. I walked around the town today with a group of people to get to know the city and explore a little bit. I live about fifteen minutes from the center of town by bus. My school/dorm is outside of the city of Rouen called "Mont Saint Aignon." It's a very cute place. There is a little plaza that is walking distance from the school that has a movie theater, a patisserie, a food mart and a few other shops. The only thing is that I haven't seen the sunshine ... read more

We left our friends Sam and Roy after spending a few relaxing days with them. What a life waking up late, listening to the cocks crowing in the farm down the road. Cock a reeko apparently is the sound they make not cock a doodle doo. We enjoyed walking the dogs in the fields near the house and sitting in the evenings under the bamboo shade watching the sun setting. How jealous I felt with their life style - for us just two weeks before going back to Glenn and his kitchen fitting and me the jobcentre. We set off for the Chateau de Josselin which stands in south Brittany on the river Oust. It is still the home of the original family. It has three majestic towers which overlook the river. I though the view ... read more
