Itinerary: · 2 Mar – dep SYD · 3 Mar – Lyon · 4-11 Mar – Val d’Isere · 11-18 Mar – Les Menuires (3 Valleys) · 18-25 Mar – Malta · 27 Mar – arr SYD Week 1 – Val d’Isere (4-11 March) After 9 months of planning the day finally arrived for us to depart from Sydney. Dale, Mum and Dad had departed a day earlier and flew into Zurich with the plan to catch the Glacier Express scenic train from St Moritz to Zermatt. Our flight from Sydney to Singapore was thankfully uneventful with a row all to ourselves. Unfortunately our night flight from Singapore to Frankfurt was very eventful with the passenger on the window waking us every 2-3 hours needing to go to the bathroom. At first it was very annoying ... read more

French Alps And now for something completely different. Hill Climbing and re- acclimatisation. From Asti in western Italy with an elevation of just 123 meters to Mt Cenis in the French Alps poor Skippy grunted up the steep, winding and narrow S25 to Mt Cenis ( a lofty 2900 meters). The climb did not really start until we got to the French Italian border town of Susa. From there to Mt Cenis is only 30 odd klms. So most of that 2800 meter climb was in that 30 klm of serpentines, switch backs and zig zags. What goes up can also come down – So then we dropped down the western side to the town of Bessans with an altitude of just 1700 + meters. Temperatures dropped like a stone over the edge of one of ... read more

A long time since our last blog but a lot has happened and we have travelled quite some way. The tour of the battlefields in Ypres was excellent and moving at the same time. There were just three of with guide and we visited a number of sites including Tynecot cemetry and Polygon Wood which is where my grandfather fought and was wounded. At Sanctuary Wood some of the trenches have been left in tact which was fascinating and sobering. Since then we have travelled through France and in particular visited historic towns of Laon and Bar Le Duc: These were both fortified towns with stone walls and large cathedrals on top of ridges. We have stayed at a couple of incredible chateaux, including one where had a eight course meal over three and a half ... read more

WOW, if we ever get this sent off it will be a miracle!!! This blog has been in the works for an entire year......yes, we were in Val D'Isere December '06 - May '07 (meak laugh) Sooo following our Christmas in England, we flew to Val D'Isere in the french alps to start work as chalet maids in a 5 star chalet...our first lot of clients were arriving the next day so let just say we were thrown in the deep end!!!...enough said, despite neither of us having ever worked in hospitality before we managed to charm our way through the season turning our 'very very important' clients into friends. Val D'Isere itself is actually one of the most beautiful places on earth when it was snowing it was just like being in Narnia. Even after ... read more

I have found a computer. I arrive at the next farm this afternoon. Well It seems my last two blog entries were lost in a server crash. Maybe its for the best? I have readded some of the pictures.... and a summary: Crazy, long lost brother-uncle-cousin Steve lands in Geneva, Switzerland in an intense delerium, returns to his french family, drools into his fondu and mumbles unintelligibly. He is forced into slave labor picking fruit in the Alps. thats about it, steve ... read more

A fellow Australian runs a large part of the 3 resorts Val D'Isere, Courchavel and Tigne. So since he and his family were living in a wonderful chalet alongside a frozen lake in Tigne, this provided an excellent opportunity to visit for the weekend and escape the already-mounting heat of Provence. In fact, given the relatively warm winter, it was quite a surprise to see how much snow was still around at the end of April. Indeed, a picturesque part of the world .. ... read more

Hello everybody, I thought I would fill you in on our exciting trip to La Rosiere yesterday on our day off and our ski over to Italia! Firstly though, I need to clarify something. For those of you who can ski you will be familiar with the piste grading system and know that a red isn't really that hard, or a black come to think of it. Well I had no idea until yesterday. Basically, I knew Val was meant to be a hard resort but didn't realise to quite the extent it is. The pistes in la Rosiere were so easy and groomed. Their reds were equivalent to our greens and blues. No wonder it took me ages to work up the courage to ski a red here whereas I skied down lots of ... read more

Bonjour peeps, I would just like to point out 2 things. First of all I have fulfilled my aim of the season and skied down La Face (without falling over too-yeyyy)! There's no point in skiing any more now-haha! Secondly, yesterday I was sitting in a towel on my bed after having a shower and disturbed by a random male guest who burst into our room wanting to look around without even knocking and thinking we were out!!! It could have been far worse. Anyway I shouted some obcenities at him and he scuttled away. How rude??????? The others took the piss out of him all night and said I was justified in swearing at him. I don't actually care really as we go home soon so it's not like we can get sacked. Oops, did ... read more

Hello everyone, Well it has been ages since we last updated this as we are terribly lazy and resent having to pay a fortune for the internet. I hope you realise this is costing me a whole weeks wages! If there are lots of typos it's cause the keys keep sticking and not cause I am bad at typing. Anyway, I hope everybody is well and looking forward to springtime. We have been getting slightly bored here with the whole routine of cooking and cleaning plus I really can't face most of the dinners anymore. It's too much effort to change our menu plans though so I'm living off mustard mayo sarnies and Weetabix. At first we were really getting to know the guests but now it seems as though we are churning them out and ... read more

Well hello all, I apologise for the fact that it's been ages since this was updated. My only excuse is that looking after so many guests has taken it's toll or maybe it was the blue skies tempting us into skiing rather than being cooped up in the internet cafe? Anyway, I have yet another cold/bad throat so I am taking it easy today to try and recover. I'm sure it's the lack of sleep and rubbish diet that has contributed to this rather than the smoky bars and skiing all day! Also, I would just like to say in my defence that I have only ever got up late on NY day whereas now Angus has managed it 3 times! I was actually up and ready for breakfast but he had told me to go ... read more
