Sinds maandag 13/9 staan we in Tournon-sur-Rhône. Toen nog bakkend heet. Dinsdag uiteindelijk koeler, want zwaar bewolkt.

ss Catherine – Rhone River – Burgundy Woke up this morning to the twin towns of Turnon-sur-Rhone and Tain l' Heritage. They are across the river from each other but connected by the two first suspension bridges built in Europe and before the Golden Gate Bridge. The twisting wire process was developed for these. We were guided through the small town of Turnon sur Rhone a cute medieval village. With castle cathedral and the cobbled streets. Funny thing on our walk we came across large windows looking into a spotless high tech workshop with mostly Asian people making dentures and bridges etc. It looked weirdly out of place in the old villages but obviously was making work for the locals. The guides like to talk about their socialist country. They are proud of the free health ... read more

Starting to feel like we are being fattened for the slaughter. We have eaten so much. At least 3 to 4 courses each meal and yeah I know, you don't have to eat it but the food is so good it is hard to knock back. Anyhow, off to breakfast..... We have a cruising morning so quite a few take advantage of a sleep in. Lots sitting in the lounge watching our progress up the river, some reading, computing and sleeping. Very lazy morning. We do lunch then onto a bus for a quick trip to our next outing. A ride on the Ardeche steam train up into the hills. All herded into open carriages with vey hard seats then we start the climb up to a station with a very long name. Beautiful scenery on ... read more

This holiday has been a little like pin the tail on a donkey. We could just as easily get the map out, close our eyes and stick a pin in it anywhere. The weather was going to be the same whatever we did. Still there is always a silver lining or so they say. Mum used to say "Jennifer , you make your bed and you sleep in it! " She was right. We can complain about the rain but we sure as hell cannot do anything about it. Complaining won't make it go away. We are still steadily heading north towards home. We have not contacted Eurotunnel yet to find out if we can an earlier crossing. According to sally sat nag we are 24 hours from Tulsa - no not really 24 hours from ... read more

After such a rich dinner last night I could barely eat breakfast. So much food and way too much wine with each course. I had a small bowl of cream of wheat and a half a piece of toast with hot tea. Perfect. Right after breakfast we got our laundry together in the bag and gave it to our cabin steward. The cruise line offered free laundry as a return guest. So nice. About 10:00 we started our walking tour and wine tasting. Kind of early to be trying wine but that is what they scheduled for us, it is noon somewhere! We went to a winery and tasted 3 wines and they were all terrible. The white was just okay but the reds were terrible. We enjoyed the village on this side of the river ... read more

Today is Thursday and the only reason I know that is from the daily program! I continue to try the daily breakfast special, today was crepe with berries and it was so good! Of course I also had to have croissant and today I had 2! This morning we started with an onboard private lecture from the famous chocolate house, Valrhona. We had a powerpoint presentation and learned all about how to chocolate is made. After the lecture we had a chocolate tasting and we tasted 5 different varieties of dark chocolate from different regions of the world. Valrhona has relationships with small cocoa farms throughout the world and it's amazing to taste how different the cocoa beans are. This was a great way for me to start the day! Following the tasting we walked to ... read more

My friend Catherine managed to fly over from London for a quick visit while I was staying at Michèle’s. She was the English Teacher’s Assistant at my school Lycée Gabriel Faure during the 1999/2000 school year and she still agrees with the other teachers that my class was the worst they’ve ever had. Luckily she doesn’t hold it against me and, like a good teacher, realizes we weren’t really evil, just rambunctious. We spent a lovely day with my parents driving around Tournon and visiting wineries. Dad was on a wine mission and so we made our first stop at Chapoutier in Tain l’Hermitage, because Chapoutier really is one of the best. These are the vineyards I could see from my Spanish classroom’s windows at Gabriel Faure. What really impressed me was that the more recent ... read more
