Today was to all about us recreating the perfect day we had on our last trip to France and while we did not expect perfection again, we do love the towns so we would try to recreate it again. The Lunch restaurant we went to last time was shut on a Monday, so we consulted TripAdvisor again who recommended La Mule Du Pape Restaurant. The lady who took our booking yesterday was so friendly and helpful with our english, and when we arrived she introduced herself and her personality was infectious. She would engage all of her tables and would help anyone who needed more assistance with which Vineyards to go to. The food was at the same level as the Staff, we both selected the Daily Set menu, and both commented on why we don't ... read more

We have always felt an obligation to support local businesses when we travel, and never is this more true than when we are in a wine-producing area. Therefore, we embarked on a guided tour of the Chateauneuf-du-Pape area. This part of the Côtes du Rhône AOC. The rules here for labeling a wine appear to be a little complicated, but as I understand it you can label your wine with the Côtes du Rhône AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) if the wine production and grape sourcing are all within that defined region. As I understand it, you are not allowed to make wine from a single grape variety, but must blend at least two. You can further refine the label if the sourcing and production are done within one of 95 approved communes, and then the label ... read more

As I write this entry, it is actually April 29, and we are in Millau (much more on why we are here later) so if I switch tenses, please forgive me. Chateauneuf-du-Pape was the summer residence of the Popes when they were based in Avignon. The papal palace in Avignon is quite spacious and elaborate (we have only seen it from the outside) but those poor popes needed a break from such splendor and headed north about 25 miles to Châteauneuf. It probably wasn’t called that until after the popes started living there. There is not much left of the Chateau, mostly ruins. It sits on top of a hill overlooking the village and is arguably the best wine region in the world. Châteauneuf-du-pape is my favorite wine and the most interesting in style. All French ... read more

We arrived at Chateauneuf-du-Pape last night. Our mooring is 3km from the town and this morning we have free time. Some rode bikes but they also had a mini bus doing shuttle trips. Not a lot to see in town other than an old chateau on the hill (ruins) and lots and lots of wine dealers. This area grows and makes a very nice red which is tightly controlled in how it can be grow, picked and then bottled. We walked up to the chateau, which was rather steep but great views when you made it to the top. Looking down at the vineyards and crop fields it was very pretty. Back to the ship for lunch then off to our organised winery tour which also took us back into town and to the chateau again. ... read more

The next day we sadly left Paris and took a train to Chateauneuf du Pape. It took 3 hours on the train. We heard our stop and we started to get our bags, but while we were getting our last few bags the doors shut and the train started. How many things can you miss in one trip? So, at the next stop we had to get off and quickly get on another train going the opposite direction. Then we got off on the right stop and got our rental car and drove to a winery (Vieux Telegraphe). After that winery we went to our hotel (AirBNB -Peaceful Designer Village House ) Then after the hotel, we went to another winery (Barroche) Then we went back to our hotel and hung out a bit and then ... read more

After 20 days and 8 stops we left Spain for the South coast of France, the landscape changed gradually as we drove north, hills became greener and the vegetation more varied, with the Pyrenees to our left we crossed the border to la Perthus and made for our first stop, just south of Perpignan, in Argeles-sur-Mer. Argeles-sur-Mer is quite a busy little resort town with a lovely beach and plenty of campsites to choose from. There is a wide promenade/park that stretches the length of the beach and which displays a kind of outdoor exhibition of marine photography on large boards placed all the way along, so as you walk towards the little port you can admire some gorgeous photos of Mediterranean sea life. Across the port you can see clusters of red roofs set in ... read more

Next stop was the unmissable Loire region, a long drive from Beauvior to pretty Braciuex. We visited two chateux over two days - extravagant Chambord on bike and the refined Cheverny... there are a few pics of each included here. Chambord was built by, but only lived in for around 45 days, by Francois I. Louis XIV also lived there but no-one enjoyed it much because it was too big and draughty. Our next destination was Lyon, with a stop over in Chatel-de-Neuvre as a picturesque half way point. Lyon was great fun - our first day of sunny, warm weather - with a visit to the Musee des Baux Art, our first French three course lunch, and sight-seeing in the medieval quarter and the Roman ruins of the Odeum and Theatre. Lyon was the centre ... read more

We have been really excited about today. I booked an all day Provence wine tour of the cote du rhone and chateauneuf du pape wine regions for us. We took a taxi downtown to the tourist info. Office where we were to meet our guide from Avignon Wine Tours. David met us along with 2 men from south Africa, Peter and Marius. We departed a little after 9:00 and drove north out of Avignon to wine country. David is a master sommelier and was so excited to share his knowledge of wine and of the Terroir of the appellation. We stopped at a vineyard of 60 year old grenach grapes so he could show us the rocky soil. This soil is not just pebbles but full blown cobblestones that are natural to the region. The avignon ... read more

Rick Steves is a great guy. If you need a cheap hotel in the center of a city, Rick is your guy. If you want a reccommendation on wine, don't ask Rick. We stopped at the place reccommended by Rick in Chateauneuf du Pape. This grape growing region lies just north of Avignon and is world famous for it red wines. I have only had one bottle of this wine before and I was impressed. We could of driven from winery to winery to sample wine, but when you do this you are expected to buy wine and Rebecca and I did not plan to drag several bottles of wine to Italy and then home. Rick reccommended this one stop cave where you could sample 5 different wines and buy many more. I thought this was ... read more
