Zondag 12/09/2021 – Apt. Laatste dag in Apt.

Lindsay and I started the day with a walk up the hill to St Martin de Castellan and back. By 8am the cafe was already frequented by some regular custom. From the main road nearby it is only 3km up to the village. We spent the rest of the morning relaxing by the swimming pool reading, and having an early lunch also by the pool. It was a lovely morning – warm and sunny with a light breeze. This was really like being on holiday. We were not off and about somewhere and lying in the sun is not something we ever do. In the afternoon, our last, we headed towards the east where we haven’t been before. We wanted to visit the Observatory at St Michel but at first could not find it from the ... read more

The day dawned with fog all around but it was short lived as the sun soon burned it off. First thing this morning Lindsay and I drove to Cereste for bread for breakfast and lunch – lovely, warm, fresh and crunchy bread. Lovely. We also indulged in raisin buns. We left shortly after 10am to drive to Pont du Gard via Apt and Avignon. We went a longer route as we wanted to check the location of the TGV Station for Saturday when we leave. The TGV does not share the same lines as other national trains as it is high speed and direct. Eventually we found it and continued on to Pont du Gard where we parked and had a picnic lunch on the grass. The area around Avignon sits in a flat low lying ... read more

Lindsay and I headed up the road behind Le Boisset before breakfast to find the walking track that we couldn’t find yesterday. Some way up the road we found signs and headed up on what appeared to be a farm track but didn’t appear to have any destination. Eventually, Ray came running up behind us and we continued on to the top of a ridge and came across a road, and also the hiking signs we were looking for. After one and a quarter hours we arrived back at the Gite for breakfast. Then the rain arrived. And lightening. And thunder. We spent the rest of the morning holed up inside until lunch and we then headed out regardless. It’s one of the joys of having a car and not a train to catch for a ... read more

In the morning we decided to try the hiking tracks behind Le Boisset that butt up into the Luberon Regional Park where there are a number of trails throughout the forest. Within a half a kilometre we had lost the track and after many attempts to find the correct one we headed out onto the road and back to the village. We’ll do another try on another day now that we know where the track actually does go, which is out on the road where we were. After having lunch in the courtyard we headed out in the car to the village on the road we were on in the morning - the small village of Castellet. We were on a very narrow secondary road winding across the face of the Luberon Park, through Auribeau and ... read more

For breakfast we required some nice fresh French bread from Cereste about 6kms away. It is a small friendly village with the usual shops and cafe’s and most delicious bread which we hungrily devoured for a late breakfast at 10am and into sandwiches for lunch. The Gorges Oppedette is not too far distant so we went there on small secondary roads. The gorge is a deep rocky ravine with lookouts and many tracks to walk on. We may return depending on time permitting. We went onto Salte which is well known as the centre for lavender growing. You look out from Salte over the valley floor which is patterned with crops of lavender, sunflowers, wheat, and grapes with the scrubby low mountains with rocky outcrops in the background. It is very picturesque. We bought some typical ... read more

We set off this morning in the car to do a ‘recy’ of the surrounding area. Firstly we checked out this little hamlet of Le Boisset then set off up to the village of St Martin de Castillon which can be seen from the apartment. It sits up on a hill top only a few kilometres away. What a fascinating place. Or it was to us anyway as we haven’t seen a village quite like this before. There are many similar ones around Provence and much like the pictures you see of the hill top villages in Italy and France. The buildings are stone and mostly joined to each other. The roads are very narrow. Throughout are narrow alleyways for walking joining the streets. The levels go up through picturesque arches and steps adjoined by narrow ... read more
