Having to think carefully how we spend our time for a day or two. The temperature is soaring, record breaking heat wave for June which is also affecting sourthern England but not much at home. Think Staffordshire might be due a couple of hot days then back to normal grey skies. Decided we really couldn't plan to go anywhere which involves walking any distance at all in the sun so chose a drive to Coulon in Venise Verte, the Poitevin Marais, an area just inland from the Vendee coast with lots of wetlands and canals. We have stayed at Coulon twice before and enjoyed it so an obvious spot to head for. Smart Arse and the Tomtom did not agree. I actually suggested at one point that the Tomtom might be upside down as it was ... read more

Hello All! Its been a few weeks since I last updated this blog. Truth is I havent done much exciting in that time. Since the debacle that was the castle I moved to a nice house in Neuils les Aubiers, just north of Bressuire, where I have spent most of my time digging the garden, which is back breaking. i have also done some painting, wire brushed and putty'd loads of outside doors ready for painting, and even built a tortoise run!!! Trouble is I have been working so many hours here that I havent managed to get much studying done on the web design front. Plus the house is literally next door to a wooden box making factory, and the machine that strips the bark off entire 75ft tree trunks is just the other side ... read more

So, after the horrors of the 'castle', I have found a new HelpX host, in the form of Tim and Lin, who have a lovely house in a town called Nueil les Aubiers. I have a lovely clean bedroom, and my own bathroom, and they have a real swimming pool!!! - all a far cry from the castle. I arrived here on Monday night with a huge sense of relief, and feel so much better for it. Yesterday I spent 5 hours gardening, which I have to say was back breaking. And today i have been painting walls in the far end of the house, which is being converted into a gite - having been a private nightclub for the previous owner of the house. The revolving glitter ball hanging from the ceiling is the only ... read more

and so it came to pass that my last day at Limalonges Alpaca farm arrived. It was a beautiful day, with clear blue skies and lovely sunshimne - albeit pretty cold. The day itself went quite slowly - i had breakfast and then packed all my belongings up again. Then I visited the local supermarket to stock up on bottled water and comfort food, as i didnt know what to expect at the 'castle' in bressuire. When i got back Maria informed me that Tina the Tortoiseshell had given birth at alast - she had 3 little kittens - see attached video for the ultimate in cuteness!! Then i went out to give the alpacas their evening feed for the last time. And it seemed as though they knew i was going, because they were a ... read more

well folks - as the old saying goes, nothing good lasts for ever. It is time to move on from the alpaca farm. I have had a great time here, and learnt a lot of things about life in the country/on a farm. However, my host, a small neurotic Scotsman, has made it abundantly clear that I am not welcome here. He feels threatened by my presence in some way. I think he feels that I am doing things he can do (but doesnt) and that he is losing control over his farm and his (ex) partner, who he still controls. Because she is physically handicapped she relies on him, which he enjoys. My presence has reduced that dependency, and he doesnt like it. So after 4 weeks of putting up with his snide remarks and ... read more

On Monday I witnessed the birth of an alpaca, when Persephone gave birth to a healthy, if gangly, Marcie, who weighed in at 8 kgs! It was quite an experience to witness, and the way that Marcie was up and walking withing 30 mins of being born was incredible - even if her legs were a little shakey. Sheree and Toby couldn't keep away and were constantly poking their noses in to places they shouldn't have!!! So heres some photos of baby and mum.... read more

After 5 days with no internet connection, we are finally back on. Someone in the house I am living in forgot to pay the bill, so the net was cut off. God, I didnt realise how dependant I was on the net until I didnt have it for 5 days. Anyway, it is back on now, so heres a little catch up. So on the 5th Feb I took a nice long drive through the local countryside, visiting such towns as Verteuil, Mansle, and Rochefoucauld. And I have to saythat these liitle towns, and many more like them, are just so nice. They all seem to have a lovely river forging a route through the center of the town, and no two houses are the same. They just look idyllic, and the temptation to buy a ... read more

Well, what can I say? These alpacas have no shame. I was busy working in the bottom field again, where Vision, the alpha male lives, when Maria decided to put Christine (the spitter) into the field. She hadn't been in the field for more than 5 seconds when Vision chased her around for about a minute, and then proceeeded to mate with her. And what a noise he makes!!! Christine looked totally unimpresssed but was compliant anyway. And he took about 30 minutes, which is quite normal apparently! Anyway whilst all this was going on i was busy cutting back and clearing the shrubbery, brambles, and the trees with the really hard, sharp, pointy, stabby prickles on them. I think I got stabbed in the head about a dozen times, and in the hands, arms, legs, ... read more

Hi everyone - havent had time to post anything in the last few days as have been very busy - plus I have kinda settled into a routine and doing much of the same things really, so no new things to report on. So what's happened since Monday? Well Tuesday I chopped more wood - big logs this time with a chain saw. Now this may look like fun, but beleive me, when you have sawed logs with a chain saw solidly for 4 hours, it hurts! But I got all the big logs done, so feel like I have acheived something. Wednesday was my 'day off' from working on the farm, so I decided to go for a swim in Ruffec, a small town about 15 mins away. So i had some brekkie, got all ... read more

A clear field, finally, after all the wood chopping. This is going to be seeded with special grass to give the alpacas some good quality grass for grazing on.
I'll look after the chicks, honest!
