What a journey! It always feels a long way before we start to feel we are on holiday. By the time we reach the M6 we generally though feel as if we are on our way. 5 hours of driving and we arrived at the Channel Tunnel. France and Calais beckoned just the other side of the Channel. We had planned a leisurely ride down to the Dordogne with stops on the way. Our journey on the train never seems to take long and on the way we found ourselves talking to two Maltese men, a father and a son who had travelled from home in Malta to Britain to purchase their second hand cars and then drive them home across Europe. It appears that it costs less to buy a car here in Britain, drive ... read more

I learned to tango in Amiens. I never expected to tango, but when the opportunity arose, I defined the first rule to live by on my trip: I am not allowed to refuse an invitation to anything. The point of this thing is to expand on every element of my social being, and the only way to do that is to get out and DO THINGS. Tangoing is actually pretty easy. Tangoing WELL requires a few lessons. My SERVAS host, Jason, is a math teacher by day who moonlights as a tango instructor. He is a short, endearing 30-something year old man who loves comic books, and who (like many French people I’ve met) seems to have a closet that consists almost exclusively of striped, Marcel Marceau-esque shirts. My time in Amiens was actually just a ... read more

Well today was epic, we went on a day trip to the town of Chantilly on the train and walked from the train station to the Chateau. (It rained today as well as a little thunder storm) The Chantilly estate began in 1484 when Chantilly came into the possession of the Montmorency family. The first mansion was built in 1528-1531 for the Constable Anne de Montmorency. The Petit Château was also built for him, around 1560. We went through the Petit Château on a guided tour. The Château is actually made up of two châteaux (yes that is the plural) that join together, the 15th-century Petit Château and the 19th-century Grand Château. They house the Musée Condé, featuring the Duc d’Aumale’s beautifully decorated private apartments and a fabulous collection of old master paintings and rare books ... read more

Last night's dinner was, as predicted, pleasant enough but overpriced. The cheeseboard was, however, sensational. We did get four courses for the money though neither of us could finish the crème brulee. Today was the first cool and not very sunny ride since we left the UK back in early June. It was cool enough to wear gloves, the first time I have worn riding gloves since Italy on the way out. I have learnt that after almost 4 weeks of sweating into leathers that any clothes worn under them are no longer fit for wearing afterwards. I am going to need to find a way of getting the leathers smelling like leather again and not of four weeks of stale sweat. Hilary's jacket, on the other hand, no longer smells musty - it's been worn ... read more

France is originally named after the latin word francia which means land of the franks. there are many theories to the origin of the name but they all have to agree on one theory one day. France has the largest area from all the European union and is kind of larger than Spain. France's modern borders are just like the t Gauls which was conquered by the Romans in the 2nd century. The gauls had to the tongue of the romans which was latin and also roman culture. Laon has a lot of medievil building's. One of the most important one is Cathedral Notre-dome laon. It dated back 12th and 13th century. It is now used as a courthouse. there is also a gothic cloister and an old chapel of two story's. The church of Saint ... read more

We read about a Cathedral that topped Notre Dame and is the biggest in France, we decided to head off for a day in Amiens (even though neither of us had ever heard of it and still cant pronounce it). Our Europass train ticket has been fantastic for just jumping on trains and heading off wherever we want to go, whenever we want. It took a little getting to, about an hour on a train and then another half an hour on a bus (a flash TGV bus though, so it wasnt exactly a hardship). Our first stop was to check out this cathedral, which was worth the trip alone and was truly impressive. The front face was absolutely covered with carved figures and took years to complete. Would recommend a trip to anyone to see ... read more

We finally had our first official orientation today after being here for 3 weeks now... and the President of the international students association was naming all the countries that were attending the university here. He mentioned Vietnam...and for some reason I was the only asian guy in the room, so there were heads turning for a while trying to find this Vietnamese guy until all eyes finally laid on me. lol. Then i realized what just happened...so then i had to say out loud, ummmm....im from chicago or en francais "Je viens des Etats-Unis"! After I said that, people had this look on their face like they were kinda confused. lol. And then they served us lunch. We went around introducing ourselves and then of course the first thing they said was "ah, tu viens de ... read more

Another thought. I just want to say how much pressure it is to be really the ONLY student in class. I’ve never known anybody to be the only student in their class/have I known a class with only one student in it. At first, it started off with two people…. this other French chic and me. Now normally, if a class is under enrolled, they cancel it (back at SDSU, at least). But much to my surprise, they kept the “class” going. Since the faculty only offer two classes that has any correlation to my multimedia major, I had no choice to stick it out and stay with it. And I knew it was only a matter of time until that other girl will stop showing up. And I was right. She was gone the next ... read more
