Tuesday 1st October, 2008 The plan today was to move from Saint Quentin to Compiegne. The journey was a little longer than we have been completing, we filled up with petrol first thing, only our second time since arriving. Drove through all the minor roads, which we prefer to do, you get to see the sights that way, rather than just hammering along the main roads. Stopped at a French Military Cemetery at Cambronne-Les- Ribecourt 2100+ mainly second world war. Laid out in circles, very few flowers. Our first planned stop was the Chateau de Compiegne, which Pat had found in the guide books. A Royal / Imperial Palace. We arrived when it was closed for lunch, so popped across the road to Les Accordialles, the Madame was very much in charge of the place and ... read more

Tuesday 30 September 2008 A rainy day in France - sadly. Anyway, the plan was to visit Amiens Town, then Peronne, then American Memorial at Bony and then on to Saint Quentin. Found our way into Ameins and a town centre underground car park, we are definetly getting better at the driving and finding our way around. We only had one car beep at us today. We had a quick coffee at the first place we came to, Le Carlton. Strolled around the town for a short while, found the tourist office, for the city map etc. It was drizzling so we had a walk around the Amiens Cathedral, for a while. A beautiful piece of architecture and not small. It wasn't completely destroyed during the war, but nearly. We walked around for a while longer, ... read more

Monday, 29th September, 2008 Wow, what a day. Woke up and got moving quite early for us. Left, Bethune with a heading of Amiens, with a planned stop at Thiepval. We had booked our next night in a Premiere Classe in Amiens, so this was our destination for the day. Popped into a supermarket for bits and pieces. Visited The Notre Dame De Lorette, French cemetery, truly massive, containing 40,051. I may have said it before, but a photograph does not convey the sheer size of some of these cemeteries, with the grave markers stretching off into the distance, this place was big. Stopped at the local Estaminet and had a coffee, the place is filled with Trench Art and memorabilia. The little dog continually tries to get your attention to play with his toys, very ... read more

Today we picked the car up in Paris and headed for Amiens in the country, north of Paris. It was a shakey start with Ev first losing his credit card at the train station then once we picked the car up in the first 10 metres Ev scratched the rims of the car on a very high curb. We finally made it onto the highway and were off. About an hour and a half later we arrived in Amiens. It is a beautiful little city on a canal, definently a place I recommend going if you want to chill in little bars with a few beers. We stayed with a friend of Shaun's, Maud and her boyfriend Reun. They were great hosts and Maud feed us well. On Saturday we drove to the coast and taught ... read more

I decided that of all the historic places I wanted to see in France, and in my life in general, Verdun was very high if not top on the list. In 1916, the area near Verdun, a small town in Picardie became the seat of one of the largest battles in the history of the world. As the lines stablilized and the infamous trenches became established, the German Chief of Staff, one Erich Von Falkenhayn, decided that the only way to win the war was not through traditional victories at strategic points, but rather through a complete and thourough destruction of the French army. He wrote to the Kaiser explaining this: "The string in France has reached breaking point. A mass breakthrough—which in any case is beyond our means—is unnecessary. Within our reach there are objectives ... read more
