Leaving the Loire Tonight at Sully sur Loire will be our last night by the lovely winding Loire River. For 10 days we have meandered up the Valley Loire. Autumn colours convert before our eyes from vert green to lemon and yellow which then becomes a speckled orange on its way to rusty red and deepening every day. Under sky that has lost its blue to give way to grey the darkens every day, flakes of colour fall from the trees to ground while mists become more the norm and daily rain is as reliable old father time. This has been a time to observe. And to gain a sense of how a foreboding frosty winter will be delivered on time. Amongst it all farms are worked with intensity. The Loire Valley is a huge flood ... read more

Dinner at Blain 16thOct Such a pretty place. Such a plain name. We got the good oil suggestion to camp on the waterfront. Camped beside a canal. Rustic footbridge bridge across the canal. On the other side of this little waterway is Le Chateau de la Groulais – A castle built from between the 11th and 14th Centuries. Not so new. Its a pretty enough set of buildings and some poor Frenchman now tries to eke out a living by running a flash noshery from the site, feeding well fed food loving French. Speaking of eating- what did we have for dinner last night as we camped there? Well you get bit tired of steak, fish, pork, and chicken. So it was time to try cheval. Unusual to us but commonly available in butcheries and supermarkets ... read more

Today was our test run for Bob’s new device. A handlebar holder for the Tomtom so we could use it on the Kisbee scooter. We got up and out quite early for us and were on our way by 10am. The Tomtom behaved perfectly and took us straight in to the Cathedral. What an impressive sight. It isn’t often that one gets an uninterrupted view of a cathedral but the Le Mans one is perched up above a big open square with a commanding view of all it surveys. Coffee first and then we climbed up to the steps for a visit. Such excellent timing. We realised very quickly that a wedding was about to start so went to the front doors as they were opened and all the quests came flooding in. The priest then ... read more

The sky was clear when we went to bed even if a little chilly but my goodness, did it rain in the night. Had to leap up to shut the roof vents. Luckily it had dried off by the time we got ready to leave. Heading south, Le Mans first stop on our way to the south as though we’ve driven past we’ve never visited up to now and Bob has found a campsite close enough so we can scooter in. The overnight rain returned as we left and stayed with us all morning on and off. Reminds us of the weather we’ve been having in Staffordshire this summer, a little bit too much cloud and grey sky and too little blue sky and sun. We were not in any particular rush so Bob chose a ... read more

After having been aware of many covert conversations between my conspiring companions, your correspondent confronted them face to face. Wendy the Navigator and Cusco the Chief Spaniel, then announced their plans. They were of the opinion that a summer holiday was in order, a statement that left me somewhat speechless. A few weeks by the seaside were required to recharge batteries and the town of La Tranche sur Mer in Vendee had been chosen, so off we went. While driving there, your correspondent was reminded of his happy holiday in Vendee with family when he was around 13 of our earth years old. Oh those were happy times. Almost dying during first ever asthma attack and having our possessions "borrowed" by the surrounding neighbours made it a memorable time. I also spent some time wondering why ... read more

A lazy start to the day then we took the bikes to find L'Eclerce, Cathy getting withdrawal symptoms after 24 hours without shopping. Ha, it was closed – everything was closed except restaurants, cafes, bars & boulangeries so we bought some bread. So we came back, had lunch & took the bikes around L'ile de Mouchet, a circular route for walkers & cyclists. There are loads of cycle paths around & plenty of purpose built roads that accommodate cyclists so is a magnet for them – hence the young family I suppose. A lot of the Loire valley is much the same apparently probably as it's so flat & pretty. It became very hot again so we sat beneath the shade, helped a couple of French chaps fix their ancient caravan with the tools I had ... read more

The short hop was fine..except for where there was a massive motorway junction where 3 motorways joined / separated & some bright spark put a peage area right where it caused the most disruption. 45 minutes later we were off again & the traffic was quite heavy until we got around Angers. We can't complain – our first traffic hold up in 4 months. We got to the site whilst the reception was closed so we had a late lunch whilst waiting outside the barriers. A few cyclists turned up laden with gear everywhere possible, including a family of 5! The chap had a tandem arrangement behind his bike for two children & Mum had the baby of c.24 months behind her with lots of gear, including Pampers & potty. Barking mad? Thankfully again, they had ... read more

If the Daily Mail is to be believed ( and really, why wouldn't you believe such an impartial, well researched daily journal........) France is a mediaeval throwback full of immigrants and angry farmers and Dover is currently like Guantanamo bay. It isn't. We may have been lucky but the journey to Dover yesterday evening to the camp site there was uneventful to say the least (apart from the horror of Ash not getting his promised chilli sauce in the pub which is still affecting him deeply today, the weeping has only just stopped....). Once at the campsite the usual teething troubles we face every year, this time with the telly and a couple of fuses, happened but somehow my limited electrical skills and the fall back of a fire extinguisher meant that all was OK and ... read more

We had a bit of trouble with the internet so we now have found a place we can do a bit of writing to tell you guys what we have done so far. From Etten leur we drove down to Rouen where we stayed two days to see the place of Joan of Arc's martyrdom. We actually saw the place where she was burned in the middle of town in 1431. The timber framed houses dating from the 15th century still occupied. Next stop the Loire valley with all it's beautiful chateaux. To describe every chateaux would be to long, but the amazing thing of all of them is the ages and grandeur. We stayed in a bed and breakfast in a little village called Onzaine. It is very central to the castles that made ... read more
