For anyone interested, the 'g' is more of a 'j' sound, unless the man in the tabac was toying with me. Mon francaise est terrible encore... Anyway, I made it again, 115 miles today and yet again quite a sore backside at the end of it. My left foot actually began to hurt a little today, so it seems unless I can come up with a revolutionary method for riding a bike the next 18 days could vary between moderate and extreme discomfort. It's not that bad actually, yet... Just quickly, the worst part so far would have to be yesterday getting the Man United chant "this is how it feels to be city... etc" stuck in my head, after hearing it on repeat for about 15 minutes at Craven cottage a week ago. Today was ... read more

Day 3 Last night in our infinate wisdom and to try and cool the tent down, we slept with the fly sheet open. This proved a mistake when stoph woke me up saying that he thought he had a bug in his ear and could i shine the torch inside his head to try and find it. I obliged and did my best to re assure him that there was nothing but a good deal of ear wax in his ear and that he should go back to sleep. After another whort while he still proclamed that he thought there was something in there tickling his ear drum and that we should try and flush it out with some water. He promptly lay on his side and i poured water into it. Sure enough after he ... read more

Bonjour! Last Friday, we arrived in Angers after flying from Dublin to Nantes and then taking a train from Nantes to Angers. This would be a special week, because we were reuniting with friends that moved to France for school 6 months ago (Soup and Mike). Soup lives in Angers, and Mike is living in Toulouse, which is about a 6 hour train ride from Angers. Upon arriving in France, we found ourselves in a different world - a different language world. I was pretty excited because that meant that I would get to start exercising my French, but I was also intimidated. French French is different than Quebec French, and my grammar is not fabulous. But it's fun - I really like trying to have conversations here in France, even though I struggle. I am ... read more

Sarah and I are now in Angers with our good friend Soup! A lot happened in our last day in Dublin though. We visited the Chester Beatty Library and saw a display that provided a glimpse into various religions. Included among its materials was a fragment from the original Gospel according to John. We also visited the Natural History Museum of Ireland. There we saw a very long and very old canoe. We read some history on the Vikings, and looked at some old medieval weapons. We sat in St. Stephen's Green and watched the birds. The beauty of that park makes it quite apparent why the Guinness family is so loved. The park was built by Guinness and is well maintained - open everyday for the public to visit and enjoy. The Guinness family also ... read more

Continued: …the blood spilled out, first as a trickle, then as a solid stream from my thumb. After some wandering around we were able to break apart a tongue depressor and turn it into a pressure-applying splint to stop the bleeding. After all the good times in Bonnetable, it was suiting that this would happen just before my departure. I wondered if the Gods were telling me to stick around. Nevertheless, I hit the road the next day, traveling through Le Mans to arrive in Angers that night. It seemed that each day I traveled, the weather was getting just a little bit colder. As I went, I passed several areas under re-pavement. It really looks like this whole country is being repaved. Then I smelled something odd. My Russian friend Irina had told me that ... read more

Oct. 28th 2009: I started my new job one week ago and during the first five minutes I met my (new) boss he told me he had to go to a meeting in Angers (France) this week and asked me to go. Of course he did not have to convince me! and a couple of days ago we did a nice 9-hour trip by car, crossing half of France, to Angers. It is fall and all the trees are showing their best colors, even I could see them! Once in Angers, well... I am not going to talk about the meeting, that is the boring part, we did some walks around the city. It is a small city, easy to walk (even though with the tram constructions all over the city...), with a river dividing the ... read more

La baule I'm not sure for other regions, but for my region this year there was a special with train tickets from May until September. For 35 Euros you could purchase a ticket for up to five people that was valid for two days for our regional trains the TER. The TER is a slower train and it makes many more stops than the famous TGV. This reduced ticket is a great way to see more of the region that I was staying in, so I took advantage of it. La baule is a famous beach were Parisians like to take vacation. The first time that I visited La baule it was five of my friends and me. To make it a really cheap trip, which was the point, we left on the first train on ... read more

So I've started my last week in France before I go back to the States, and I must admit that I am not at all excited. Sure, the US is a fine country with lots of really cool places and landscapes. But I have never in my life felt so at home as I have this semester in Angers. At one point during the semester, I had set my mind on staying in France...going to school here and starting my life "over" à la française. However, considering I am leaving this country Saturday morning, I obviously had a change of plans. And frankly, I'm not exactly content with my decision. I think that either way, I will learn a wealth of information and will experience an abundance of new things. It's just that I'm truly happy ... read more

Hello! So the semester has ended, people have gone back to their respective countries and alas the world continues to turn. Most people went back home this past weekend… it was so sad to see my really good friends off at the train station Saturday and Sunday. Needless to say, tears were shed. The last few weeks of school were absolutely amazing. The weather was gorgeous. Flowers were in full bloom (and Angers is not at all lacking in the flower department!). And exams were just around the corner. My exams, though assez difficult, seemed to have gone well. So I’m super excited about that. And my defense of the paper I wrote during the semester went incredibly well. I was so surprised. As I was waiting to be called into the room, I seriously thought ... read more

Ok, so my last two posts have had NO vocabulary words/expressions. My apologies! So this post is nothing but a few phrases in informal French. Enjoy! =) 1) le pieu - bed « Demain je reste au pieu jusqu’à midi » = Tomorrow I’m staying in bed until noon. 2) Ne pas avoir un radis - to have no more money « Je n’ai plus un radis » = I don’t have any more money. 3) Être rond(e) - to be drunk « Il est complètement rond » = He is completely drunk. 4) Une tarte - a slap « Toi, si tu continues, tu vas recevoir une tarte ! » = If you keep on, you’re going to get slapped ! 5) Cinoche - movie theater « Si on allait au cinoche ? » How ... read more
