The expression pretty in pink springs to mind when visiting this rose of a city. Toulouse is renowned for it's uniformly "pink" terracotta coloured roofing. In certain lights, you can certainly see a rosy halo which bathes the city in the warmest of hues. Compared to other cities we have been to, there was a marked lack of tourists around. It was a nice departure from the usual mass of humanity we routinely encountered in our travels. Toulouse is a very walkable city, just as well as we only had a day there really as we changed the itinerary to have one night here to break up what would be an otherwise painful train ride. As it was, the overnight train ride was painful anyway. There were no phone/device charging points (odd considering that such a ... read more

Woooohoooo! Yes, we are in Toulouse! To recap so far, we flew into Heathrow 2 weeks ago now, then straight on to Glasgow, Scotland for a couple of days, mainly to visit Carol's relatives which was great! We also visited Dundee, Tayport and the Falkirk wheel while we were there. After that we headed down to London for a day and had the fasted whirlwind tour of the City on foot you could think of, but we managed to fit in Harrods,Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and a few other spots before negotiating the Tube back to our Hotel in Kensington. The next morning found us at Heathrow bright and early for the flight to Paris. We arrived to fantastic weather and experienced our first French cuisine at a local restaurant, one of many we experienced during ... read more

The French really know how to throw a conference, because as we all know, it's not the information but the food everyone talks about after these things! I'm obviously being tongue-in-cheek, because the papers have been quite amazing. They do need to be, because we start each day at 8.30am and finish at 6.00pm. Lunch is a gastronomic, 90 minute affair involving foie gras, freshly cut jambon, all sorts of little blinis with prawns etc., then some sort of hot dish and salad. On the first day I thought we were done and went back to review some work, when Suzanne announced that dessert was on - a selection of wonderful petit fours including Isabel's favourite macarons, served with espresso. I would have saved a couple for her if I hadn't been sure they would be ... read more

Toulouse. The reason we are here! Well, after a VERY hot, largely sleepless night, Isabel and I are not feeling so thrilled about the heat. I am complaining now, despite being determined not to. We need to work out a system for shutters (close to block out noise from the road and light), windows (let in slightly cooler air but shutters need to be open for them to do that) and fan (strategically positioned to blow on both of us at the same time without being blasted in the face by hot air). It could be a very short stay if we don't work something out tonight! I know it's the worst heatwave in 80 years, but I'm feeling a little dumb today that I didn't choose somewhere to stay with air-conditioning as I really am ... read more

We were a bit sad handing over our lovely key at The Grand Hotel. It had character, like the rest of the place. In a more practical sense, it was too big and heavy to lose and it always worked! The cat who was the real boss at reception didn't want us to go either, it seemed, so it sat on our invoice until the receptionist shooed it away affectionately. There are cats everywhere in Molitg, always in the best spot to either catch the morning sun or the afternoon shade. Once again, it was a beautiful day, so we decided to stop at the market in Prades for a late breakfast and to buy some fruit to keep us going on the drive to Toulouse. Isabel spied a lovely basket and we also found a ... read more

And so our journey draws to a close. In my remaining hours (I spent a good bit of time catching up on this blog) I will go wander the city, as it seems checking out Cite de l'Espace would take a full day (which I no longer have), and the Airbus tours require booking 48 hours in advance. With luck, tomorrow's forecasted thunderstorms will hold off until I get myself to the airport. Meanwhile, here's a start on explaining the routine I got into over the past 2 weeks. ... read more

What can I say about the final riding day? Again, we were blessed with fine weather and beautiful countryside, once we got out of town. After gathering for the final group shot (I obviously never got the memo about what to wear), we set off in rush hour to try and find our way out of town. After a few abortive attempts we finally emerged and roared over hill and dale, pausing occasionally to let the group coalesce before accepting the inevitable and dropping a couple of slower riders. The rest of us continued on at a brisk pace, separating on the climbs but regrouping for the flats and generally enjoying the day. After a brief stop in Lisle-sur-Tarn where we waited for the Musee Art du Chocolat to open (sadly, I seemed to be the ... read more

Toulouse to Bayonne and the Pyrennees in southern France 12 to 13 August 2013 We had 30 kms north to drive to Toulouse in southern France. Toulouse is the 4th largest city in France with 400K people. Its fame is based on its aerospace industry: Concord, Airbus, and the Ariane space rocket originated here. Our visit was mainly focused around the Cite de l’Espace (the space museum) which was massive. We could have spent a whole day there. It was a mixture of the Canberra Questacon (everything was very interactive for the kids and educational on space issues) and the Washington Aeronautical Museum with its big range of space ships/rockets/robots etc. and a whole lot of information on space exploration. It was definitely well worth the visit at 25 Euros each. We also visited the very ... read more

We arrived in Toulouse in the afternoon and caught the shuttle into the city center which dropped us off at a station about a 5 minute walk away from our hotel. There were a ton of people out at the street cafes and bars on the Friday and the whole inner city had a really nice laid back vibe. Right away, from airport to check in, we noticed how everyone is super friendly and helpful here. After checking in, we walked down to the main train station to book our train out in a couple of days. We originally had planned on staying in Toulouse for two nights and then taking a morning train to Luxembourg but after some group efforts by the SNCF counter, we discovered that this would not be possible. Something about Sunday ... read more

Spain 15th October - 16th October It's our last day in Spain and we decide to take a drive north of Calpe to Moraira, a beautiful little town on the water with a lovely harbor. Thankfully, the town has ordinances in place to stop high rises being built. We really like this town! And immediately we find a restaurant for our prix-fixe lunch. We're waited on by a young English lad whose parents had moved to Spain when he was nine, and I think that if I were to move to Spain, then Moraira might be the place. The food was tasty, well presented and of course our mantra “if two is good, then three must be better” made us have entree, plat and dessert. We also explore Point Nau which appears to be a little ... read more
