Wednesday 20 May 2015 We seemed to have arrived in Normandy at the same time as a rather wet cold weather pattern descended on the region from the North Atlantic. It reminded us of occasional days in Dunedin. So with appropriate layers of clothing we headed off for Bayeux. The car park was only a few minutes drive away and to those with a tight budget this might have seemed extravagant but the weather was being quite unpredictable. Just as we arrived so did a heavy shower of rain and hail. The cathedral offered us sanctuary from the patchy weather. The interior was quite outstanding. It has been lovingly restored and well worth a visit. The cathedral was built by Odo, the brother of William the Conqueror. It seemed like an English invasion today with many ... read more

This morning I did a bit more exploration around Bayeux. First of all, I went to see the famous Bayeux Tapestry (see picture of facsimile. I saw the real one, but photography is not allowed.). It is a cartoon embroidered on linen that tells the story of how William the Conqueror came to invade England in 1066. The tapestry was made only a couple of years after that, so it is nearly 1000 years old. My next stop was the World War II Battle of Normandy Museum just down the street from the Tapestry. Yesterday's tour dealt with the initial invasion on D-Day, but the museum goes beyond that to recall the events of the next three months that it took for the Allies to drive the Germans out of Normandy altogether. A highlight of the ... read more

Special Note: this blog is for two days, specifically 7&8 May, 2015. I spent most of May 7th in my new car. My first task was to fiddle with the controls and figure out better how things work. After I accomplished that, I drove to Giverny to see the Monet Gardens. Along the way I passed through several small towns in the French countryside. I stopped at one and took a picture of my little black car parked in front of a church (see picture) just because the town was so quaint and picturesque. The Monet Gardens are bright with colors and there were lots of tourists there to see them, along with a number of gardeners to tend them. I got a photo of the famous Japanese bridge (see picture). My next stop was Chateau ... read more

Normandy and D-Day are easily recognized words meaning the greatest amphibious assault in human history that brought the end of WWII in a little less than a year. I was privileged enough to get and spend a day touring the sights during my recent trip to France. I stayed in Bayeux which was liberated by the British and not touched during the war so the town is just as beautiful and authentic as it was before the war. Many of the restaurants and various places in town have signs thanking the liberators and welcoming veterans and maybe it is all a tourist ploy, but I did not get that feeling walking around the town. These people are still very thankful for the sacrifice that all the Allied troops made to liberate the French people from the ... read more

For those of you following along and know that I spent a few days in Paris, perhaps expecting a blog about Paris, let me say this... Fuck Paris, except for the Louvre. In fact, if I had made the mistake of not coming to Normandy, which I considered after my experiences with Parisians, I would have robbed myself of one of the most impactful and enjoyable days of my life; not to mention, been sour on France. For those travelers considering France for the first time, please do not spend the majority of your time in Paris. Get in, see the Louvre and whatever other cultural sites mean something to you, and get the hell out! Now, having said that, let me tell you about the first 24 hours of my life spent in Bayeux, France ... read more

No worries about freezing in our room last night. The bathroom nuclear zone was keeping not just our room but part of the hallway nice and toasty. We almost didn't need to towel dry after our showers. The water evaporated quickly. Outisde our hotel window the parking lot was dry as well. There was even a glimmer of sun out over the Channel. It looked to be a rather promising day weather-wise. Now that France was expected to be back to her normal return two days after Christmas, we passed on eating the hotel breakfast. Instead we decided we'd head back into Bayeux and shop at the huge LeClerc foodstore we passed numerous times trying to get out of town. As I started us on our way I spied signs at the edge of Arromanches depicting ... read more

November 15 , Bayeux tapestry and the Museum of the battle of Normandy – I visited the Museum of the Battle of Normandy and the Bayeux tapestry. Both were impressive. I was awed a bit by the Bayeux tapestry. It was fascinating. I have booked a bed in the Smart Place Paris hostel next to the Gare du Nord station. So tomorrow morning I will head to Paris. I will take the train from Bayeux to Caen, then transfer to another train to Paris. It arrives at the Paris-St-Lazare station and I will have to take the RER or a bus to the Gare du Nord. From there I will have to walk over to the hostel. I’ve started out with 3 days in Paris and I will see how much more on Monday. 15 novembre ... read more

November 14 – Omaha Beach, The American Cemetery, and Pointe du Hoc – I had set my alarm so I got up around 8 and after drinking my tea and thinking things over and doing a little homework I got dressed and walked over to the train station. When I got there I checked out the Hotel De La Gare. The people who worked there were very nice and there was a connected café where one could sit out on and eat but they didn’t have WIFI so it was out of the question staying there. So I decided to just stay at the Premiere Classe Bayeux where I was. By now I didn’t have time to go into town to see the Bayeux Tapestry and get back to the station in time for the #70, ... read more

November 13 – Bayeux – I just didn’t want to give up on the day last night and stayed up late doing homework. A s a result by the time I got up and had my tea and thought things over, and did a little homework it was pushing 2PM……good Lord! So I quickly got dressed and walked over to the train/bus station here intending to have a look around and then catch that “bybus” into town. While waiting for the bybus I noticed that the buses were very infrequent in the afternoon and just decided rather than wait just walk into town. So I started walking and when I got to the roundabout I took the wrong road off to the right and ended up walking all the way to the Eisenhower Circle before I ... read more

November 12 – Bayeux – I had a busy day today. I got checked out of my room in Caen and took the bus to Baeux. I took the bus because the train went to the train station outside of town and I couldn’t check into my hotel room till 5PM so I wanted to go to the city center where I could explore things a bit as well as check out the information available from the tourist bureau. Then I would explore a bit more and maybe find a local bus that would take me a bit nearer to my hotel. The train and bus lines travel almost on the line between Caen and Bayeux, that the English and Germans fought it out while the English and Canadians were trying to take Caen. Bayeux was ... read more
