Ugh, so I am sick and you have no idea how hard it is to be sick in a different country! In France they don't have health insurance like us Americans. Well, they do but it is completely different. I feel like I am pretty much isolated thanks to my sinus infection because just about everybody does not want to be around me. Who can blame them? But, when you don't have your parents or siblings or whoever to help look out for you it gets pretty tough. Even if you have a boyfriend or girlfriend they just don't want you to come over when you're not lookin' your best. :( I just wish someone would be nice and sympathize for once... this is the part where I really miss my mom. Anyways, last Friday I ... read more

On Saturday the Galvez's had a big engagement party for their eldest son Matthieu and his fiance Claire. Claire's family arrived late in the afternoon, and then her mom came later. She has two siblings whose names I completely forget (yeah, kinda typical of me!), and her parents are divorced. We started eating around 9:30pm, and finished at 1am! Seriously, when people have ANY type of party in France, it lasts until midnight or 2am even if it is totally awkward. In America, we end things at 10pm! I think we need to learn something from the French... including eating. Anyway, we ate a traditional Spanish food called Paella. Antoine Galvez is Spanish, and it's one of his favorites, so obviously Rosa learned how to make it even though she is Portuguese. Basically it's a mix ... read more

I know that when I return to my home of Boston, MA in June/July that I will be obviously different in some ways more than others. I figured I would list some of them now just so you can be prepared for when I come back! New Habits: *I eat a load of food at breakfast and lunch, but hardly anything at dinner. This is how the French do it! *I don't snack anymore! *I drink MILK... out of a bowl. *I eat cheese more often now, but now as much as the French because you get super constipated sometimes. *I wear black clothes, and I swore before I left that I would never wear black, but here I am. These Europeans love their dark colors, and I simply don't fit in with my bright red ... read more

At first, when I applied to the WIA exchange program I honestly was not thinking about the long term effects this year would bore on me. I thought, "Oh hey, it's just a year, and I don't know French but I don't think that this is really a big problem." Not knowing French was a HUGE problem at the beginning! I was just downplaying everything, and I am almost glad that I left myself as a blank canvas not knowing the language. I have proved to myself that I can learn anything fast; it just takes dedication and large amounts of time. My first day at Julie Daubie Lycee (my school in Rombas) I was completely terrified. I could not say hello to anyone, let alone say my name! I had no friends for a good ... read more

I just finished up the first day back to school after 15 days of vacation! I was in the Alps for my first week, and the second was spent in the Vosges mountains. In the Alps I was with the Gelmetti family, and there we were stationed at the Grizzly Hotel in Les Deux Alps. Every morning we would take "les oeufs" up to the top of the mountain, and from there we would choose our paths down. I was with my first host family, the Gelmetti's, for this first week. For the second week I was with my host family now, the Galvez's. We left for the Vosges last Friday, and arrived back in Rombas last night after a 2hr. car drive. It was a lot worse going up to the Alps because that took ... read more

Growing up I read alot as a kid about the British in WWI and the battles at Ypres/Passchendaele, the Somme and so on. The French I knew were doing their thing somewhere, and were taking appalling casualties, but I didn't really know much of the detail. Well, a lot of them were at Verdun. Now it is an enormous national monument - something like 9 or 12 villages were destroyed, and there was so much unexploded ordinance about they didn't bother to try to rebuild the area for miles around. They built an enormous, sombre ossuary at the top of the hill to hold the remains of 130,000 unidentified French "polius" (it means "unshaved") and mourned their losses. (All through France - every village and town - you will see sad little monuments to WWI losses. ... read more

Place Stanislas - the most impressive puplic square I've seen and recognised by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Black and gold gilded wrought iron gateways surround it, also includes the impressive Hotel de Ville. Arc de Triomphe - Nancy's own, off the Place Stanislas. Parc de la Pépinière - very nice and green, rosary and a small zoo, the usual statues and fountains Nancy catherdral - unfortunately was being restored so was partially covered in scaffolding Bizarre bronze sculpture (how Lonely Planet put it) - near the station, a column with what looks like a load of doggy doos on the top!!??? Nancy is very nice - Large commercial throughfares with department stores and shops displaying crystals and jewellry glittering in their windows. As usual there are heaps of cafes and brasseries for people ... read more

Days have passed slowly but surely, and finally tomorrow it's time to catch the train again. I haven't really packed yet, but as the process of “packing” will be this time something like throwing my light explorer a.k.a. sleeping bag, toothbrush, journal, camera, mp3 (with a superb voyage-collection to fit every possible mood!) and some important papers inside the backpack and go, I'm not really that concerned about not having the time to do it. Yesterday was reading packing tips from one web-page, and after reading this list, I panicked for two seconds about being very ill-prepared, but then, if I need something I'll buy it there, and if can't find it, I won't need it. Simple. A well-known fact is that the Nordic people LOVE planning! So, surely we have one: the plan is to ... read more

For the last few days we have been heading ....south west - not exactly in the right direction to get to the Far East. Is it the strong pull of the mother land calling us back? No actually it’s the beautiful Moselle river, leading us from Koblenz in Germany, along the border of Luxembourg, and into Lorraine, North east France. We’ve been a bit more intrepid since leaving Cochem, wild camping for 2 nights in a row and was never more grateful for a shower than yesterday arriving in Nancy (those wet wipes don’t quite cut it for more than 2 days!) Entering France was a bit like leaving toy-land (Germany) and re-entering the real world ( the world of no cycle lanes and graffiti) as we head into the industrial cities of Metz and Nancy. ... read more
