Geo: 49.159, 5.384 We got up in the morning, had breakfast and headed out to see Strasbourg. This is just for Anton, the Strasbourg we are in is 15 km inside France, from the German border. We walked over to the Cathedral. We could see the tower before we even got anywhere near it. It is 550 meters high, 1800 feet. The roof is kind of flat on the main part of the church. It sticks way up above every building around it. Also, this being a Saturday, everybody and his brother was there to visit. There must have been 10 bus tours going on while we were there. Tons of people! We squeezed ourselves inside and looked around. There is an astronomical clock in there that has been running since the middle 1500's. It must ... read more

.Not quite as sunny as forecast when we woke but good enough for a scooter day out. As it happened by midday the sun came out properly and we had a rather lovely blue sky day. First stop on our scooter tour of Verdun and its WWl historical sites was the Underground Citadel. Built in the 1600s to defend the city which has long been in the disputed area between France and Germany it now houses a rather brilliant display of its usage during the war. We did the tour on an automated ‘truck’ which took us along dark tunnels in which filmshows suddenly appeared on walls which then parted to let us pass through. At one point we almost appeared to be on a plane looking down and then the, fortunately short, trip through the ... read more

Had a lovely drive today. Such a pleasure to take to the open roads of France which have so much space we can actually enjoy driving, well Bob drives, I enjoy it. Woke to a slightly damp day, a teeny bit autumnal and misty, very pretty especially on such a nice campsite. We set off in good time as quite a few miles to cover and we were not touching motorways today, Bob had found what looked to be good route cross country. It was. We drove through several small towns, always more interesting than bypasses. We also drove past miles and miles (and miles) of agricultural land, fields, mainly already harvested and enormous and not separated by hedges as are many of our English fields. We must have seen a hundred tractors working away, ploughing, ... read more

Geo: 49.1525, 5.36557On Thursday we left Austria and Camping Grubhof, one of the most relaxing and spacious sites we have ever stayed on, but in high season this comes at a price. But hey, we're on holiday! We were soon over the border into Germany and on to the A8 motorway. I had read about horrendous delays on the stretch between Ulm and Stuttgart due to upgrading, but apart from a short standstill for a minor accident, we kept moving - with limitations, that is. When towing in Germany you are restricted to 50 mph and between certain times and carriageways there is no overtaking, so that adds to the journey, but on the positive it is toll-free motoring for the time being. However, we arrived at our overnight stop, Camping Waldpark at Hohenstadt in rain and with ... read more

It is by wonderfully sunny afternoon, this Sunday December 1st that I boarded the regional train towards the City of Metz and its Christmas Market, Christmas Markets should I rather say as they are 6 in total spread around the city centre, but all within a walking distance. As soon as I arrive in the historic train station I was greeted by the towering silhouette of the giant Vosgian Christmas Tree dressed in silver and white which welcomes you in a City that knows to celebrate Christmas with warmth ! I know the centre of Metz quite well and yet it was a a wonderful surprise to discover all these familiar Streets and squares dressed in festive colours starting with the Place de la République with its Big Wheel and its Ice Skating Rink then to ... read more

Metz the discreet ! This is how I would describe this City... As opposed to its famous neighbour city Strasbourg, immediately recognizable through its black and white buildings, its Christmas Markets, gastronomy and traditions, the Capital of the Lorraine region is not featured much in the news or even in the documentaries highlighting the beautiful régions of France. And this is a shame really as the Lorraine region has so much to be discovered and enjoyed by the Visitor, much more than the recipe of its namesake "quiche" or even the famous Mirabelle plum I am of a curious nature opened towards the world, but this is only last winter while I was watching the "Come Dine with Me" show set in Metz, that I was finally able to discover the Capital of Lorraine and its ... read more

Motorhome News from Switzerland. Part II 12th September 2013 From Grimentz in Switzerland, On Her Majesty's Secret Service - to Verdun in France, in search of memories of those who gave their lives that we should find peace. Here we are again. Turning up like a bad penny just when you thought you'd heard the last of us. We want you to join us this time as we take to the Swiss mountains, so get your boots on and bring a hat and a pair of gloves, it might get cold. We're off for a gentle hike or two with a bit of added grey haired nomad excitement thrown in for good measure, and then we'll be making a dash for the lowlands to the north to escape the cloud and rain. ... read more
