So its Saturday night 3
rdAugust.
Catch up time again as we have been too busy (and the wifi has turned ferral again).
So, Thursday 1
st Another walk day. This one a 12 km around La Roque Gageac. LRG is another old town but built into the cliff and right on the river. The walk takes us through the town, up over the cliff and into the farmland and forest behind. This is a beautiful walk on lovely shaded tracks. Plenty of farms of various types, with the most interesting being a Fois Gras farm with hundreds of geese. I imagine they would be fat but they actually look quite fit. We startled 2 deer in the forest as they crossed at speed 5 metres in front of us. Beautiful animals.
We think we saw a marmat but it could have been a domestic cat that had lost its way………. Another hot day but the shaded track was great – as was the swim in the pool on our return. Dinner was a great salad on the picnic tables at the hotel. Sweet!
Another great day.
Friday 2
nd Were off to Rocamadour – very famous
medieval town above a gorge. Today is hot (39) but we are here to walk. Town is very interesting and the church houses the (in)famous black Madonna which was apparently until recently famous for miracles. By the look on the faces on some of the attendees, they hadn’t heard of the statue’s recent skill downgrade. Walk turned out to be 18 kms and is pretty horrible although once in the gorge we were treated to 5 or 6 old mills that stopped working when the river ran dry (17 century global warming?????).
Now this walk was an ordeal and we both ran out of fluids with 3 kms to go. Unpleasant last hour as it was on a white rock track and that tended to reflect and increase the heat.
We survived.
We headed into Brive where we dump the car on Sunday. Some scratches on the front end that weren’t marked and I wanted to make sure that they understood that we didn’t do them.
Guy was most understanding and advised that we will be OK.
Tired, we get home late but still had time for a swim. Then into town for a re-run
of chicken chips and salad. Day wasn’t perfect but still enjoyable.
So to today, our last full day in the region.
We decided to go canoeing. $50 for 3 hours. You go downstream and they pick you up and drive you back at the end.
This was brilliant and a lot of fun. I paddled most of the way but luckily can still type (just) now.
It was great to go downstream past the old villages and get an entirely different perspective. Its hard work as we left ourselves a bit short on time (we got there with 90 secs to spare) but that just added to the fun. There were a couple of areas that were a bit more unstable than others, with rocks close to the surface, but you learned to identify these pretty smartly.
Back home for a bite to eat, a sleep and a swim to end the day.
Dinner was a 4 course French themed special at a lovely local restaurant and it was fabulous.
We head off to Brive tomorrow where I will post this blog provided the connection is better than this one. We lose the
car there and resort to public transport again. VFT to London on Monday. France, like Italy before it, has been exceptional. If we enjoy the UK as much, all will be good.
Cheers for now
