I spent Sunday afternoon and Monday morning in Nages with Edouard and Odile. As is the custom, the majority of time was spent discussing personal relationships, eating and more discussion. We never did get outside the gate even for a walk. The weather was nice though, a Mistral was blowing. You can tell by the color of the sky.... read more

6th September 2006: After the longest & hottest train journey known to humankind (oh yes, 9 hours without air con in a cabin of 6), we arrived in the south of France in beautiful Nimes to visit Carey, another great friend from my student days. We were both AFS exchange students in Strasbourg 13 years ago! After returning to Texas to finish high school, Carey went on to university and was granted a scholarship to study in Marseille. She subsequently met Thierry, the local Frenchman who captured her heart, they married a few years later and had 2 gorgeous girls Gabrielle & Emanuelle... and here we are! We spent most of the first evening drinking the local red wine, catching up on each others' lives and enjoying the entertainment that can only be provided by a ... read more
Carey & Thierry's fantastic home, built into the old town wall. Yes, the tower you can see belongs to them & you can even pee in it! (It's the bathroom guys).

Hello Everyone! Today we woke up early and went up to the Cevenne Mountain Range... Took a long hike through the river valley and down into St. Jean Du Garde, a very quaint little town where we found one cafe open for lunch, the rest were shut down for the World Cup! There is nooo escape! This is my last day in France, tomorrow I leave for Rome and the Amalfi Coast. I wanted to follow up with some other pictures I found of Barcelona, the first listed here is the monument to Christopher Columbus that is at the base of the La Rambla and dominates the port of Barcelona. Supposedly on this exact spot, Christopher Columbus landed after discovering the "New World" and was met by Ferdinand and Isabella. If you look closely you can ... read more

Next was Nimes via St Tropez (again $$$, but a bit more personal). Nimes was a porta loo and our dodgy hotel was the big lump of shit in the bottom that smelt! Never the less it was only for one night - thank goodness! Alicia and I sat down to dinner in the hotel restaurant, accompanied by 3 festy rabid dogs and 1 feral cat waiting for scraps. I gave them half of my steak in order to: a) stop a dog from humping Alicia's leg and, b) tearing me to pieces! (And I am not exaggerating!) Glad to leave town before the next gust of wind blew the motel over! ... read more

Well, this was quite the journey. I'm writing to you finally from the south of France, I've been up for 24 hrs and had the trip from hell, but I'M HERE! :) I took off from SFO yesterday morning around 7am, connected in Dallas, then flew from dallas to Paris, waited in the train terminal at Charles de Gaulle for 4 hrs, finally got on my train, and now I'm here, 3 1/2 hrs later.... I've had my first european beer, and now i'm sitting on my parents back deck at their house here in Anduze, pic attached. It's very pretty out, very warm, my mom and Andre and I are drinking French beer and eating nuts, they are basically waiting for me to crash. I hope everyone is doing well, please email me whenever possible, ... read more

The above title is a rhyme so you can pronounce Nimes correctly. I visited this city to the northwest of Aix for my research project on Roman ruins. It has the best preserved Roman amphitheater in France. It was a heck of a lot nicer than Frejus's, and bigger too. This time I had company on my travels- Mollie came with me. We met at the train station to take a train to Marseille but the train was delayed by half an hour! We were in danger of missing our connection to Nimes, but then I had a brillant idea. We could take the bus to Marseille! So that's what we did. Adapted our plan and made it to the "train shed" with time to spare. The ride to Nimes was much more crowded than my ... read more

Hey everyone! Some friends and I took a day trip to go to Nimes about a half hour away. Must say that I am feeling that we got the shaft being sent to Avignon, as Nimes is much more beautiful and less hot. We stayed at the park all day, walked around a bit and had lunch. Pretty low key, but that's what I like to do in a new city....not too much of a tourist. I am off to the pool in a little bit to enjoy the simple pleasure of dunking myself in ice cold water. Really have learned how to enjoy the simple things in life. We are off to Cassis tomorrow to swim and see the Calanques (big lagoon-like structures that were carved out by glaciers). So, ya, excited to be in ... read more
