Left Valencia with some delay. Strange thing with the spanish railway is the very professional luggage control and checking in procedures at beginning or mainstations. On all the smaller station it s no problem to jump in without luggage control.

Valencia- Narbonne took about 7 hours. Specially the last two hours are exciting, the mountains of the Pyrenees and after Perpegnan kind of swamps with water on both sides around the train.
Had a stop over in Narbonne to wait a few hours for the highspeed train to Toulouse who stops at Carcassone. Only a 25 minutes trip.

I promised myself to visit Carcassonne for two reasons. A few years ago I saw from the train Lourdes- Toulouse the Citadel and it looked magnific. A second reason was my younger brother who died two years ago, not even 49 years old who was very enthousiastic about it.

Arrived at Carcassone 22.34. Just opposite of the station is the Mac Donald.what look a bit strange in such an old city.
Found my way to hotel Bastide . Original the city started about 800BC but the ville Basse where the hotel is situated have been built in the 13th century. Probably that time they built the hotel as well.

The nightporter, who was sleeping in the room behind the reception explained that she was waiting for me.Normally the nightshift ends at 9 pm, than the night starts. If it was absolutely necessary to go out still after that late hour you got a secret code to open the door. It worked.

Room is o.k. the airco is a window that opens 15 cm and the bathtube is so big that a bath with a 4 person family is no problem.

Hai Bert, Thanks for your reaction. Nice to read your daily experiences. Know the area Narbonne Carcasonne, have been there a lot if times in my "former" live passing by. Must be a very special occasion for you to visit Carcasonne. Is not the Spanish raiway of a wider size as the rest of Europe? And if so you always have to change into other railway coaches if on an international track? Take care, Cees

Carcassonne
No Cees you don t have to change trains and not like entering Russia they change the wheels.I think its the wheel system that is adjustable by going very slowly over a part of special rail and slowly slowly the wheels adjust to the european size of the track They only need a few trains with this system, the ones who cross border regurarly
