Today started with breakfast at our hotel. I think it was by far the worst breakfast we have been offered. All the breakfasts on this trip are buffet. Typically there is plenty...scrambled or hard boiled eggs, various rolls and breads, meats, cheeses, bacon or ham, yogurt, cereal, fruit and a variety of coffees or cappuccino. Today the yogurt was not very good; the fruit was from a can; the scrambled eggs and bacon were not cooked well and so on. Surprisingly enough the hard boiled eggs were NOT cooked. You had to cook the yourself! BUT the croissants were the best we’ve had and topped off with Presidents butter....marvelous. The coffee was from two coffee machines. We weren’t smart enough to figure out one and he other only had had chocolate, cappuccino, and cafe au lait (hot milk with a little coffee added). So a Parisian caffe sounds pretty inviting.
It is rainy and cold today. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. It is supposed to stop raining by early afternoon. It is also cold... about 40 degrees.
There was a good bit of traffic and many roads were blocked off because of the yellow vest rioters. Our first stop
was to take a boat ride on the River Seine. It was cold and rainy but the rain pretty much stopped by the tome we boarded. Not many people went on the open deck if the boat but Shealyn, Marsha, and I are troopers. We wanted to get good pictures and have an unobstructed view. The saddest part was seeing Notre Dame. I almost didn’t recognize it. Shealyn was most excited to see the Eiffel Tower.
After the boat ride we took a bus tour around the city. We saw the arc de triump, Joan of Arc statue, drove down the champs eleyse, & Les Invalides (place where Napoleon was buried). Since it was raining we had a hard time getting pictures.
Following the bus ride we had free time for a couple hours so we went shopping. We also went to the Louvre but the lines were so long we couldn’t get in. We did get some fun pictures outside.
Dinner tonight was st a French Restsurant, Les Noces de Jeannette. It was a fun evening with many laughs. It started with the older gentleman that was waiting our table. We asked if they had wi-fi.
He thought we asked for white wine and brought a carafe to our table. We all were puzzled until Shealyn figured out he didn’t speak English and thought wi-fi was white wine.
Our dinner choices were escargot or quiche(appetizer); duck ala orange, fish with cream sauce, or chicken with mushrooms (main dish). With our main dish we had spinach and a square of something we didn’t recognize. I suggested it might be polenta....Shealyn thought I said placenta. Needless to say she was shocked that I would eat it! It took a while before we got this one straightened out!! This caused much laughter at our table!
To top it off we had an accordion player for entertainment. She was excellent and was able to get all of us to participate in Allouette, Chicken Dance, Can Can, and in honor of May 4th....Star Wars! What a fun night!
Our evening was topped off with a bus ride around the city to see the lights. The best part was seeing the Eiffel Tower all aglow!
Now off to bed as we travel to Belgium tomorrow.
