Well I will do a little recapping. We left home less an a week ago yet it feels like we have been gone for ages. While we were in Paris we met up with our niece and nephew and a day before that we did a tour past the district in which their hotel was located. Being budget travellers the area was "interesting". We took a photo (see attached) to show their mum! I got their permission to be cheeky. When we met up with them Callum was stirring his sister because the previous evening she had declared that "this area doesn't look familiar". Callum said it was a euphemism for "I'm lost". It became our catch cry for the rest of the day together. We had a great time together walking through the back streets ... read more

A whirlwind 3 days in Paris but we packed in a lot in that short time. We had a 2 day pass on the open top touring buses and there were four routes that took us all over Paris. We managed to fit in the longest tour covering the main attraction on the first afternoon after arriving at 6 in the morning. We were very proud of ourselves for managing to stay awake and get organised to do that. The next day we planned to do the next 3 tours each an hour long. We had a slow start because I think the jet lag had caught up with us a bit. However we managed our goal and arrived back late in the evening and then took a stroll around the neighbourhood to catch the Friday ... read more

Our day started early with breakfast in the hotel, and then off to the metro to get out to Versailles when it opened. It's about an hour from the hotel on the train, so it was a good sight seeing journey in a double decker railcar. The sky was blue and no sign of clouds so we had some good luck with the photos today. Once the train arrived at Versailles, we walked the five minutes from the gare and were soon face to face with a monster known as Versailles. My first thought was, I don't remember it being so big. I remember my first trip to Versailles thinking, I understood why they had a revolution, it was just so big. So, to the gate we went and got our tickets and then off to ... read more

The sky was blue outside our window this morning at 8am but by the time we were ready to get moving, the clouds had started to move in. We left the complimentary unbrella at the hotel trying to think positive and started walking toward the river. We did some zigging and zagging and eventually stumpled in on our neighbourhood from 2006. We stayed in the Latin Quarter that time, and recognized many of the buildings from the area as we walked around. After crossing the bridge, we got to Notre Dame. There was a steady stream at the entrance so we joined the flow and made our way inside. There is photography allowed in the cathedral so Penny got busy with her SLR taking pics of the stain glass and other stand outs in the building. ... read more

Blogging again! It's been about a year since my last blog from Asia (the vacation trip to China and Japan that Mark and I took last summer). I think I promised more tales from that trip and then got sucked back into the world of work and daily life. So this trip I am hoping to do a bit more writing while traveling. We brought Emily's Mac and it's far superior to the junky little notebook toy computer we took last summer. No offense, Mark or toy computer manufacturer. This trip was about a year in the planning. The impetus for the adventure was the engagement of our dear friends Lisa and Rikard from Sweden. They are these beautiful friends we made--first Lisa in Shanghai at a language class and later Rikard when they both came ... read more

Monday 25th October: Today we went out for a walk around Saint Germain, it's a really nice old town with lots of shops and things to see. Our first stop was in front of the chateau in Saint Germain, it's not the most beautiful chateau in France but it's quite impressive. No-one lives here any longer but it is now a Museum which is a place with lots of old objects in it. We then went into the park next to the chateau and I saw the place where Louis XIV was born, he was one of the French kings, they used to live in Saint Germain before they built an immense palace in nearby Versailles. The park next to the chateau is really big and has a huge terrace which goes all the way to ... read more

Friday 22nd October: After a long flight over from California I finally arrived in Saint Germain en Laye which is only a few miles outside of Paris, the French capital. I wasn't creased at all which is quite amazing given that I have travelled thousands of miles to get here! It's a really old town and the building I'm staying in was built in 1792! I didn't get to see much of the town on my first day because by the time my guests took me out of the envelope it was already dark outside. In Europe when winter time arrives the days get shorter and it's starting to get quite cold here. I'll have to go out and buy myself a scarf to keep me warm over here! The people I'm staying with are called ... read more
