This ending led to a wonderful beginning! My program is over, all papers are written and turned in, all tests have been taken, and a year of study completed. It was extremely hard parting with my "new" friends but I think we all have faith that we will not lose touch-and at the very least we’ll always have Paris. Since then I’ve been spending more time away from Paris than in it strangely! A Colorado friend met me shortly after my program’s end and we visited Versailles and then left sizzling Paris for some fun in Switzerland. We started in Geneva where I was pleasantly surprised. I found it to be a wonderful city full of things to do, happy people who speak French, and the best mix ever of city and nature….why all cities are ... read more

Bonjour all you people, So, I think it's now been 2 days in Paris, I'm not really sure. In fact, I don't even know what time it is. I'm currently sitting in the middle of the lobby of our Paris hostel which is located right at the apex of the party/ghetto/very Vermont & Adams looking part of Paris near Republique Metro Station. I'm surrounded by 3 clocks, one says that it's 7:05, one, 5:45 and one, 1:10. It's dark and late, that's all I know for sure. Now for the good stuff. We came in via train from London which of course means the Channel Tunnel. I regret to inform you that the tunnel (Or Chunnel, as no one here calls it) is not nearly as interesting as you'd think. I'm more or less certain that ... read more

Hi people interested in the Hinkley blog. We had a very interesting day yesterday...hardly relaxing, but I am glad we made the effort. If you remember we had a "must do" list, and everyone got a choice. Deans "must do" was to visit the Champagne region of France. Sounds easy - just hire a car and drive about 90 minutes (if you miss it you end up in Germany!!) I am telling you now NEVER drive in Paris - I drew the short straw. Besides everything being on the wrong side, not understanding any signs, and the maniac drivers I must have done something right because once we were on the A4 freeway there was snoring in the back seat. Reims (the town in the centre of Champagne) was its self very boring but once you ... read more

...in that I hadn't done either of those things three days ago. The Louvre provided one of those days where you keep coming up on moments of art-inspired reverence, staring mouth agape at some sightless marble statue of Augustus who is staring sightlessly at other marble statues of other emperors you don’t want to admit you’ve never heard of, and you think okay I’m having my breathless moment of wonder and then it is ruined by a gaggle of fanny-packed Americans on the Da Vinci Code Tour. Then the ladies room was out of toilet paper and I said, fuck this place man I haven’t had any cheese in at least two hours, I’m outta here. My truest moment of reverence came today in Place Pigalle, sitting by a fountain flanked on all sides by sex ... read more

The Basilique du Sacre Coeur (Basilica of the Sacred Heart) is located at the summit of the Montmartre butte - the only hill in Paris, and the highest point in the city. Paris is a flat city - no hills except this one. From the top you look out over the city and it's amazing. The actual church is amazing too - breathtakingly beautiful on the inside (again no photos unfortunately). Not being Catholic, it is still an awesome experince walking into the place. You really feel a sense of peace - I still believe that no matter what religion you belong to, if any, when you walk into a place of worship, there is a serenity... That evening we went to see the Eiffel Tower - the Parisian icon you simply cannot go to France ... read more

Yesterday I had some trouble with the Travelblog entry so I decided to come to the Internet Café today to check on things. The Travelblog site wouldn’t let me save my whole entry and, even though I put up a good fight, I didn’t win the battle. However, having relied on computers for many years now, I knew enough to save a copy to disc just “in case.” Happily, today when I checked my entry from yesterday, both were there: the partial one and the full version. I was able to delete the "incomplete" one. It is understandable if you were confused...I was confused when trying to get around the problem yesterday. Last night was a special night here in Paris. Each Wednesday during the month of June, there are musical “celebrations” everywhere. It’s called Fête ... read more

Bonjour, mes amis: Everything is going very well here. I'm comfortable getting around by foot and by le Metro. So much is happening that I would like to share with you. My head is in a bit of a swirl. That brings me to my first point: the cars. There are some really cool looking cars here and some that are downright ugly. The drivers all think that they are in le Gran Prix. It is not uncommon to see them sitting four abreast at a stoplight and, literally, gunning their engines anticipating the light change. Then when it does change, they race to see who will be first to get into the one-lane side street. Amazing! And they do it over and over and over! Pedestrians here don't count for much. Most stoplights (which are ... read more

Paris is a beautiful city, full of old and beautiful architecture. Full of beautiful people too! We couldn't get over how good looking, and well groomed everyone was! Male and female both, they were definitely pleasing to the eye - good to know that all those rumours have some truth to them! And there were designer stores everywhere!! Certainly not something we see too much of in lovely, down to earth Perth :) We saw the famous Moulin Rouge (French for 'Red Mill'), nestled on the streets of the Red Light District (though a show there was out of the question on our backpacker's budgets as a standing ticket alone was over 100 euro!!).. We did a da Vinci Code Tour walking through the city - definitely recommend it regardless of if you have read the ... read more

After walking around for about an hour with all our gear, me and Jack found an internet café. Some crazy woman was just yelling Qu'est-ce que j'ai dit what did I say, at some other woman who told her to be quiet because she was trying to write a paper. A little frightening. We haven't really done much yet but I had the most delicious salami sandwich for lunch. Most likely so good because it was the first meal I had eaten in more than a day. We are planning on staying at a best western hotel tonight because it's my birthday. Fully legal and living regal as Jack put it. After me and Jack are done communicating with the outside world and after we check into our hotel we are planning on checking out some ... read more

Hi to everyone interested in the Hinkleys travel blog. There has been some technical problems with Lees computer so I have not been so diligent to add a new one every day but I will briefly try to bring everyone up to speed on what we are doing. Obviously still in Paris, and loving every minute. When we first arrived we had a family meeting to discuss what everyone wanted to do and then simply divided the "must do's" geographically and into days. We have managed by day 5 to fit in heaps and the list has plenty crossed out. We have done the obvious tourist attractions as well as some not so obvious. With Peter's choice the girls were not so happy to do, but since we had dragged him through many clothes shops it ... read more
