Today we decided we would focus on the two little islands on the Seine River, Ile de la Cite and Ile Saint-Louis. Mainly just the island of Saint-Louis because of being from St. Louis, MO. It would just be fun to say we are finally back in St Louis after being away from the city for two and a half months by then. This little island was cute with the typical buildings and cafes everywhere you went. Even though it was a very muggy day it was still pretty with the river running on the sides and the colors on the trees. The fall season is my favorite already but being fall in Paris was just over the top for me. We only walked around Ill Saint-Louis for a while because what we really wanted to see was right over the river on the Ile de la Cite. We were going to see Notre Dame cathedral but first to the lock bridge.
The lock bridge is a bridge in Paris that we found on Pinterest with an amazing back story. There are two different lock bridges in Paris that connect with Ile de la Cite. One is for the locks
of the ones traveling to Paris while there love is still at home and the other is for the ones traveling to Paris with their love. We went to the bridge for the loves who came together and it was completely filled with hundreds of locks attached. The idea is to write the names on a lock and throw away the key. This symbolizes the idea of your love is locked together and a way to say that nothing can break us. Danika and I really wanted to do one for our friendship on this bridge. We threw one of the keys into the water and we each are able to keep the other keys kind of as a souvenir. We thought it would be important to show our friendship and our journey of traveling together on this European adventure. I also put a lock on the bridge for my boyfriend and I even though I was on the wrong bridge. I did the exact same thing as Danika and I did for our lock.
This lock bridge was located right behind the Notre Dame. We were able to walk behind and up the side to the front doors
of the cathedral. It was huge and we couldn't believe it. Of course the bells went off right when we reached the front. We then stood in a long line that moved very quickly for us to enter the cathedral. It was completely free entry but unique that there was service going on while people toured along the side isles. Over the course of the semester we have seen many cathedrals and castles but Notre Dame was something completely different than every other gothic architect cathedral. There was so much behind the stain class windows and all the details carved into the pillars and ceilings. We stayed inside the cathedral for a while even sitting and listening to some of the service which of course was hard because it was in fluent french. It took us a while to actually leave the cathedral because we could not get over the authentic beauty. It is somewhere everyone needs to go especially because of the free entrance.
We then sat at a cafe and relaxed for a while and ate a sugar crape. Which of course was delicious. This time instead of looking at the Eiffel Tower we had a great
view of the Notre Dame. We waited here and ate until it started to get dark. We started to slowly make our walk on the Seine River towards the Eiffel Tower. It started to get dark and we could see the Eiffel Tower was all in lights but we were waiting for the twinkling lights to go off. It wasn't until we walked right under the Eiffel Tower to get to the other side that we heard every gasp. We looked up and the lights were on twinkling above us. We quickly went to the other side and began to take pictures and just stare at the tower. The lights only lasted about 20 minutes so we were really glad we were able to get there in time. It was such a beautiful sight! It definitely sealed the night for a perfect trip to Paris! I am ready for my next trip to Paris in the future.
Tomorrow we were back on a plane to Harlaxton but before we had to stop at Moulin Rouge for a few pictures.
