Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints

Ever since leaving South Africa, I have dreamt of standing beneath the Eiffel Tower, and maybe even being able to climb it… as the months have passed, the probability of this ever happening, was looking less and less, until the free day in the Loire Valley! The spice girls and David (the green frog) set off before the break of dawn to catch an early train into Paris! From then on, we walked ourselves silly - finding first the Notre Dam Cathedral, the Louvre and the Pyramid (also known as the Pointy Triangle thingie!), and then taking a lazy stroll down the Champs Elysee. I had to keep pinching myself, having sung the song many a time, but never knowing when, if ever, I would actually be able to walk this road myself. Constantly looming ahead of us, was the magnificent Arc Du Triumphe. However so as not to run out of energy, we bought some fresh French bagette, ham and cheese, and set a target of the Eiffel Tower as a picnic spot. What a glorious place to have a picnic - on a patch of lush green grass, with the Eiffel

Tower filling our view. It is even more amazing then I had been led to believe. Following lunch, we began the long climb up the 700 steps to the second level, before catching a lift to the top! What a great feeling to go whizzing skywards - bit like Charlie and the Magic Elevator! Was hoping to pop out into a factory of chocolate! But seeing the skyline of Paris was almost as good! From that vantage point, we traced our footsteps from a “birds eye view”, then patted each other on the back for the major “hike” we had just undertaken. However our trip to Paris would not have been the same without Panini man and his huge bolognaise baggettes, and chocolate crepes. Thanks to him we didn’t do too badly missing out on camp food! Such a lovely day, and a big dream come true….

Never did I think so much, exist so vividly, and experience so much as in the journey’s I’ve taken on foot.
