I decide to surprise Issy with breakfast in bed, so I do that most French of all things and make my way down to the local boulangerie to buy a breadstick and some cheese. I’ve seen lots of people walking the streets here in the mornings carrying their breadsticks wrapped in paper, and I now feel like a real Frenchman. This feeling lasts for about thirty seconds until I get to the counter to pay, and I’m asked a question in French that I can’t understand. I read an article about some slightly unusual French habits and customs. Apparently I need to be very careful with the breadstick I just bought. It is considered very bad luck to put it on a table upside down, and not just because it wobbles. It seems that putting it ... read more

Sunday 7 June 2015 Both the Château of Chenonceau and the nearby town of Amboise are places we really want to see and on this sunny early summer day we did. Our intention was to get to Chenonceau early and avoid the crowds, as we well remember an uncomfortably crowded Versailles on our visit there four years ago. Despite our good intentions, the reality of driving even short distances over beautiful back roads meant our arrival at the glorious place that is Chenonceau was a little delayed, but there was no problem finding a park in the shade (both free), then strolling leisurely up the drive with the Château showing through the trees. We seemed to have beaten the tour groups and were able to enjoy the experience without jostling for position. Chenonceau is simply stunning. ... read more

Perfect Way to Spend a Day I do not quite remember when the information about Loire Castles came to my notice. I know that I wanted to visit them (a couple) the previous year, and that this year I bought a guided bus tour to three Loire Castles with FranceTourisme. I chose the company because of the price, it was 110 Euros per person as compared to 170 Euros with Visitscope (tours in Russian). I supposed this tour would be in English, but the language did not matter too much. The Chateaux de la Loire are part of UNESCO World Heritage. There is a very long list of them, and it is, I guess, possible to comfortably visit 3-5 of them within a single day. If one has a car, or a bike, or a motorcycle, ... read more

Chenonceaux. I was sorry to leave Bordeaux. There seemed to be so much to see that was unavailable to us on this trip. An excuse for a return, if we needed one. Today would feature another 300km ride north, with a non-remarkable pit-stop or two, heading for Tours. The Chateau Chenonceau straddles the Cher River, near the town of Chenonceaux, about 30km east of Tours. Dating to the 1400's, it was the private residence of a wealthy miller but over the course of history came into the possession of royalty. Cindy detailed some of the amusing, amorous escapades of some of the royals which led to various chatelaines and other occupants over the centuries. Simply put, it served as the personal residence of five French queens, including infamous Catherine de Medici, with whose affections one was ... read more

Happy Birthday to me. I suppose this was a milepost as I turned 60 today and that monumental achievement was the whole reason I got to choose the itinerary for this trip, but it really seemed like just any other day to me when we woke up. As far as I was concerned, everyday of this vacation was special because I was not at work and I was seeing all kinds of new things that really interested me. I was truly thinking that this region of France might be just as fascinating to me as Bavaria. After waking up in our budget hotel we took nice hot showers before packing up the car. As our trip was drawing to a conclusion we wanted to squeeze in as much as possible today. With New Year's Day following ... read more

so today was a 60km bike ride. i left the hotel around 9am, the first stop was Sache at the chatau there. i arrived at the chateau around 9.20 and unfortinatly didnt open till 10 so i hung around. it was worth the wait, wasn't big but it was lovely. it was quiet as all the tourists hadn't arrived yet. after looking around the chateau and grounds for 45min i was on my way. i went through Pont-de-Ruan, Artannes, Monts through lots of little villages then through Montbazon, Veigne, Cormery, Cigogne, le Coudray, Blere, Civray-de-Touraine and then finally Chenonceaux where i went to the Chateau. when i arrived at the chateau i got something to eat and then went in. it was rather large and there were lots and lots of people there. it was a ... read more

I really must say that of all my time in France the highlight would have to have been my afternoon visit to Chateau De Chenonceau. Built on the river Cher, the Château is the Loire’s finale. We did a long morning drive to the centre of France and found it's finest Chateau. Everything about Chenonceau is perfect. From the well organised tourist centre, the tree-lined path that leads you to the stream lined gardens right down to the painstaking effort that is put into the upkeep of the interrior of the palace. For an hour or two you are taken into another world and you can really imagine the life of the French Elite. Originally built in 1513 the palace has it's place in French History, somehow saved during the french revolution and loved by many ... read more

Today was a pretty rainy day, which was disappointing because we went to Chenonceau which is supposed to be one of the most beautiful castles in France because it’s built on a river. It was beautiful, but the water was kind of gross and murky from the rain, which made the castle not look quite as cool. Also the huge front section of the castle is currently being restored and has scaffolding with this huge curtain over it with a picture of what the castle should look like—kind of hilarious, but also kind of disappointing. That being said, I still loved Chenonceau. I want to go back some time, when there are more flowers in the garden and when it’s a beautiful day. The inside of the castle was cool—we didn’t have a personal tour, but ... read more

Geo: 47.3333, 1.06667A bad sleep ... this place has the thinnest walls .... of course, my constant hacking probably disturbed my neighbours as much as they disturbed me! The problem is that I've essentially gone from a castle to ... shall we say ... something less regal? This hostel is actually great value - under 13-14 euros a night, for a private room. Off to the chateau of Chenonceau - the audio tour is done on iPod; I need to stop getting audio guides. It's not often that I bother but when I do, I get sucked into listening boring things like "Look how exquisite the coffee table's legs are ..." ... zzzzz .... I was short on time, so I figured the audio guide would be a good way of organizing everything so that I ... read more
