Earlier in the week, during my tour of Cote de Nuit, I asked my tour guide, Alexis, about what days are good to do the various things I had planned. One of her recommendations was to visit Dijon on Saturday because the markets are on and all the shops are open. So I took her advice and pencilled in Dijon for Saturday, even though neither markets nor shops held much interest for me. When it came to Saturday, I struggled to get motivated. Not only was the prospect of markets not working for me, with the wifi not working in my hotel room I had started watching the television and the only two English tv channels are BBC One and Two. Even though the tv shows weren’t particularly interesting, it was mesmerising and I chilled out ... read more

It was back on the history trail on Friday as I headed to the new (since I last visited France) museum at Alise-Saint-Reine, north of Beaune. I was really looking forward to visiting the museum which covers the battle of Alesia, the last major battle in Julius Caesar’s conquest of Gaul. I have read much about the battle, so I didn’t expect to learn much from the museum, but I wanted to see the place I had read so much about. I left Beaune after breakfast, and the drive took about an hour and a half as I still have the gps set to avoid tolls. I am really liking the drives I take off the motorways and the drive to Alise-Saint-Reine was no exception. The weather wasn’t the best, with some light rain along the ... read more

My wine experiences up to now have been almost exclusively Australian. I have had little experience with French wine before this trip, and my knowledge was limited and only theoretical up to now. I knew they did things differently here, but I thought it was all unnecessarily confusing and limiting, and their classifications kind of arbitrary. I now know better. I don’t know if it’s better than what is done in Australia, but there is a logic to it that I can appreciate. I have just spent two days visiting the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuit, the two major wine regions in Burgundy. Cote de Beaune is in the south and predominantly grows chardonnay grapes, while Cote de Nuit is in the north and has more pinot noir. One of the first surprising facts ... read more

Dear Patient Readers, Please forgive my dilatoriness but life has a way of intervening once a trip is over. Still, France is in my heart as it touched my soul with its beauty. The people were kind and good humored. The food was beyond delicious and the scenery, when it wasn't foggy or rainy, was breathtaking. So this blog will take you from the Rhone region to Beaune where we boarded a bus and drove into Paris. Paris will have to wait but as they said in 'Casablanca', "We'll always have Paris." Please remember this was my first trip to France so if I sound a bit bedazzled and like a 'fangirl', well, I was in love with the little towns and the quaint ways that people live- and not as part of a 'tourist' show. ... read more

Our next stops Dijon the city of the Mustard. We had a problem leaving Nimes for at the breakfast the coffee machine did not work so we sat there waiting to get some coffee before we left for a long journey. It was 527 kilometres to Dijon. We left with good weather but that deteriorated later in the day. We even had rain later that slows the traffic down. A few nature stops were necessary as well that gave us the chance to have a coffee or something else. The last stop we had 140 kilometres to go so we were getting close. We arrived at 6.30 p.m. Again we had a problem getting the room we ordered but that was sorted out. To late we ate in the restaurant. Had a good meal there. Than ... read more

Apart from a lot of traffic there are no problems getting back to France. There is no control or checking you just drive from one country to the other. We drive no toll roads you do see more like that but it takes a bit longer to do. We had about 360 kilometer to do that is not to bad. The roads are good and the sun was shinning what else do you want. That else was a toilet. No stations at al we had to go for a long time before we had the chance for relieve. For a male not bad but a woman needs a bit more privacy. We made a stop in a small place with a small café. We saw tables and chairs with people that meant there will be coffee ... read more

Spare of the moment canal boat cruise. My uncle and aunty from Australia were visiting and mentioned how fabulous their trip had been. We had a look and Le boat had a boat available from Tannay, 4 hours 40mins drive from Geneva. Tannay is near Dijon and we decided we would jump at it. The boat was comfortable, a 2 star so I'm told. 3 cabins with 2 beds in each, a large living space and smallish kitchen and 3 bathrooms. It is advertised as a 'no experience' necessary, and seeing as Murray has a lot of boating experience we thought we would be able to manage. Thankfully I didn't think about the trip too much, if I had I would have realised with Murray driving it meant I was walking around the boat and dealing ... read more

The morning started with a quick trip to Carrefour to pick up some cheese, meat, chips and Orangina. It i always interesting to see what the cost of items are at the local grocery store. I was surprised to find housewares and a few other things. The wine and alocohol selecToon may have exceeded our LCBO. Shopping was followed by breakfast in the hotel. It was included with our room so....off to brunch. It was impressive. You could make your own egg, several types of breads (including pain au chocolat and brioche toast), meats, mmmmm...... Then it was off to Bouchard Aine et Fils. Waiting for us was a wonderful woman who gave us a personally guided tour (just us!). They have a "five senses" tour. We heard wine making (piped in sound), looked at the ... read more
