July 25th Strasbourg and Colmar Several years ago Tom and I went to Normandy to see the beaches on which D-Day was fought. I remember seeing Omaha Beach, Pont du Hoc and the American Cemetery and was duly thankful for all who participated in this incredibly well orchestrated invasion. This was the year I began to really see what it took for the world to come together to defeat Hitler. A few years later when planning a return trip to France Tom wanted to include Strasbourg as one of our stops because he knew that his Father had walked the streets of Strasbourg as the 3rd Division continued to push the German army back over the Rhine to Germany. We walked the streets of Strasbourg knowing we were stepping where he stepped and thought that was ... read more

We went to Colmar in March, grabbing cheap flights from Manchester (£27 return). To avoid a late evening train journey, we stayed near the airport after we landed about 8.30 pm. In retrospect this was a mistake, the next morning an hour’s train ride had us ensconced in Colmar, but we effectively lost half a day in the town as a consequence. Shortly after getting off the train, on our way to our accommodation, we popped into a little café for a coffee. I hadn’t been to France for years and just this little place reminded me of the very ‘Frenchness’ of the country. I know that’s not very informative, the place was called ‘Charles Schmitt; Pâtissier, Chocolatier, and Traiteur’. Alongside the beverages it sold cakes, chocolates and traitors. Rather expensive, but lovely stuff. The interior ... read more

Tuesday 25th June Well summer has definitely arrived. It started on Saturday, and as soon as the seasons clicked over, the heat came on. Yesterday was 35 degrees here, today 36, tomorrow 37. I am heading to Lindau on Lake Constanz in Germany tomorrow, via Zurich, but the forecast is only a little cooler. The heat is forecast to continue until the beginning of next week. At least this hotel has air conditioning, though it was faulty for the first two nights here and sat on 26.5 degrees all the time. They must have finally fixed it today. No more air conditioned hotels from here on. At least when I'm up in the mountains on the weekend it should cool off at night. Mulhouse is a fair-sized city of about 100,000 or so, and features several ... read more

Saturday 22nd June The TGV was a direct service from Rennes to Strasbourg. It went via Paris, where it made two stops in the suburbs, and this was the slowest part of the trip. The train sat on 320 km/h for long periods on the run east from Paris. I arrived in Strasbourg at 7pm and checked in to the hotel which was close to the station. Then I headed out to find some dinner, crossing the river onto the Grand Île of Strasbourg, which is the old city. Google directed me to a completely gluten-free restaurant, which was a great find! I was able to have a more normal meal with confidence that it would be GF. I am a bit sick of galettes. I followed up with a piece of fabulous berry meringue pie ... read more

After leaving picturesque Grindelwald and heading back to France we passed by Thunnet See, one of the huge lakes surrounding Interlaken. From there it was pretty much non-descript highways. The big difference we observed driving during this trip is the great condition of all the roads and bridges. Everything looks new and all are free from litter. Our first stop today was Colmar, France. The old town of Colmar is called "Le Petite Venice". It was a gorgeous district crammed with camera ready buildings decked with flowers. The houses wander down the calm canal that wind through the area. We stopped for lunch at a small Brasserie which sold our favorite baquette sandwiches. Leaving Colmar, we arrived at our destination, Strasbourg, mid afternoon, and checked into the hotel. The front desk said they were upgrading our ... read more

There is a lot more to Strasbourg than the Notre Dame Cathedral and Petite France, and clearly a lot more than we discovered. We found it to be an interesting city that deserved a post. Overall, Strasbourg is a modern, easy city with an excellent bike-way system and a tram system that seems highly efficient. We found it pleasant and safe to walk around, although you should try to avoid walking on the bike paths. The first thing we did in Strasbourg was find a walking tour. There are a number in the usual places on the internet. Happy Tours seemed to receive good reviews and had a few different tours in English so we decided to give them a try. Unfortunatey, it was a damp day and turned into a full blown rainy day as ... read more

Most places, notwithstanding your first impression, have some interest. There is always a story, perhaps a lot of stories, that a place has to tell that are interesting. Sometimes you have to look hard for it. Not in Strasbourg though. It has led an interesting existence since its initial establishment as a Roman camp Our first impression walking out of the Gare de Strasbourg in the early evening was of a place that seemed just a little dingy. That probably had as much to do with the luggage distributed about my person and the walk from the Centraal Station down a road that is heavily under repair. My first impression of the Apart-hotel that we are to stay in wasn't positive. Dark colours and not so much light. But the reception was friendly, professional and efficient. ... read more

Not the covered bridge, though is has a roof: the gates underneath were an important part of the defences built for the city, but didn't work.
Shows how a name can stick - these are the covered bridges but they lost their roofs in the 18th century

Friday 15th to Sunday 17th June Besancon We have enjoyed a city break over the last three days. The old town of Besancon nestles in a loop of the Doubs River, surrounded by hills and dominated by the rocky outcrop upon which stands the impressive citadel designed by Vauban. We spent a day exploring the well preserved citadel which houses several museums covering the history of the citadel, local life and a museum of French Resistance and Deportation. The citadel was occupied by the Germans in the Second World War and 100 Frenchmen were executed within its walls for being part of the french resistance. The citadel also has a small zoo, insectarium and aquarium. We had a day exploring the city itself which is very charming. It was home to many famous people; Victor Hugo ... read more

Lovely day scootering round the Alsace. Turckheim, as well as having its own lovely town to explore, is also very well located for visits to other Alsace towns. Equisheim is one I wanted to see as we almost did last time we were here. Colmar is also only a few miles away so have Kisbee, will travel. Didn’t rush to get off on our sightseeing as we are on holiday after all. Also it was cloudy and wanted to wait until the sun broke through. Equisheim first on the list and it is absolutely charming. Buildings dating from the 1500s, beautifully restored but with lots of interesting features to attract the eye in every direction we went. Of course the buildings would have looked nothing like this in the 1500s. 2018 style they are painted in ... read more

It's quite clear once we start heading steadily Northwards that we are coming to the end of our trip but still 4 days to go. Time to stop off in the Alsace for a couple of nights. We left our lovely campsite in Lucerne in good time, gave the lake and Mount Pilatus a wave as we headed out of town on the motorway to get us clear of the town. Then a steady drive across Northern Switzerland in the direction of Basel. We passed a few lakes and lots of fields and followed a railway which ran alongside the road for a good part of the way. To get us past Basel we took to the motorway and found ourselves back in Germany which was a slight surprise (my map is small scale so it ... read more
