Neuf-Briesach, France July 31st After spending another day in Lauterbourg, we cycled to Gambshein and spent two days there. We are trying to slow up a bit because we have extra time. Our next stop was Strausbourg, where we have been before. They have just finished remodeling the whole campground and it was super nice. However, the camping was 26,50 euros which did include internet. Chuck's crank on his bike was making a clicking noise and when we skyped with Dan he said not to ride it. The next day we were due a friends of friends in Wolfischeim just 10k out of Stausbourg. We decided to ride there since it was a short distance. We arrived safely and the next day Sonia took us to a bike shop for repair. The bike was ready that ... read more

Day 8: Strasbourg to Neuf-Brisach Weather- sprinkled a little on and off today as we rode but nothing so much that we got really wet. It was nice not to have the heat considering the distance we rode. We left about 8:00 and headed to the Chocolate Museum which was 'okay' but not really worth the delay in travel. We did however, have a lovely escort to the museum by two Route Security girls. We left there and started riding steady throughout the day. We stopped in a really nice little village at a bakery for pizza lunch, STRONG coffee, and a brownie for dessert. We rode abourt 60km along a paved canal with many locks and wonderful boats and people passing by us. We planned to ride longer today but even impressed ourselves as by ... read more

Rain is not something we are particularly fond of when cycle touring and camping. Lying in the tent hearing the rain drops pelting down it always seems a daunting prospect to get up, and it’s tempting to have…a tent day (lying in bed wondering if the tent is waterproof and your shoes are wet!) But, after 3 weeks of sunshine, we must take it as it comes, and learn to live with ‘the nature’! Having left Nancy we followed the Marne du Rhin canal, using quiet back country French roads (D2, D955). It was a beautiful ride through the Parc National du Lorraine. From there we went to Sarrebourg and saw the beautiful Chapel des Cordeliers (Marc Chagall leadlight) before reaching Strasbourg, and rejoining the Rhine on its southward course. In Strasbourg campground we discovered ... read more

2/11/05 - I walked around the fortified town of Neuf-Brisach. All up I think it took about 2 to 3 hours. It was well worth the visit. The town was well worth the visit, as was its German neighbor - Breisach. The area on both sides of the Rhine was originally inhabited by Celts about 3 to 4000 years ago. The Romans were here in the 1st Century BC. When Louis the XIV lost the town of Breisach to Austria in 1697 he gave instructions to fortify the area around Neuf-Brisach to protect the French border. The resulting fortifications built by the Architect Vauban are truly amazing (naturally he had lots of help in the way of labour sourced from the Army). An aerial view of the fortifications shows it is built in a star shape, ... read more
