After the long drive through Finland this was thought of as a resting day where we can prepare for our planned trip to Tallinn the next day and our return to the US the following day. After waking up the first thing we do is a quick stop at the nearby supermarket to buy different provisions including Karelian pastry for breakfast. And then it's out to stroll through downtown Helsinki and take a closer look at the many and expensive stores. First stop was the old church close to our hotel that we could visit only from the outside as there was a wedding inside. Continuing down the Bulevardi we arrived at the Stockmann department store, one of the major stores in downtown Helsinki. Went inside and took a look at the products on offer which ... read more

Took yesterdaymorning the 7.30 ferry to Helsinki. Arrived at 9.30 and took a taxi to the Glo hotel Art near the centre. Fortunately they had already a room available. Starting price of a taxi in Helsinki is euro 5,90 . Asked the driver if that was the fixed price to the hotel. It was not. Not to far to drive so it ended at euro 10.-- Never been in Helsinki before except to change plane. Strange to see that all streets has the name in finnish and swedish. Probably still to thank that they belonged 500 years to Sweden. Also at schools Swedish is the second language . Temperature is around 20 degrees and for them it s really summer. If it comes to 25/28 degrees they talk about a heat wave.Made a tour around Helsinki ... read more

Entering Latvia on sunday there was still an oldfashioned passport control anyhow for coaches. A policeman stops the coach and studies every identity paper if it s something he never saw before. The Luxexpress coach I had made a reservation for is really rather luxurious with personal screen, internet, movies and toilet. The roads in Latvia became less wide than Lithuania the coach could not drive the second half of the trip as fast as the first 2 hours. Took all in all 4,5 hours. No stop for the driver nor for us. Arrived at Riga, another Unesco worldheritage site at 5 o clock in the afternoon. Riga is a Hanseatic town as well:The old town has some rather impressive buildings and churches however compared to Vilnius a bit less. The taxi driver acted rather sad when ... read more

Arriving monday at about 17.00 hours in Tallinn I took a taxi to the hotel. Taxidriver was complaining about the euro: Less tips, higher prices, divorced, human rights. Fortunately the kids were o.k. and his new wife helping a lot. Hope his kids are not with him. I asked him about the human rights what s your problem you re white. No, human rights had to do with his earnings he was human and should earn more.It was not his own taxi but he worked for a company and the only way to earn a bit more is to turn on the taximeter after the first 3 or 4 km. Than the passenger had to pay more than the meter indicated but they understood, O sorry I did it again forgot the meter. The distance will be ... read more

After a long flight to Europe Saturday is the first day that we have to roam around Helsinki and luckily we have good weather almost all day. Staying near the airport has its advantages if you want to rent a car however we have to take the airport bus 615 downtown which takes about 1/2h. We get out at the last stop - the central train station - and after taking a few pictures of the modern plaza we continue down to the central artery of Helsinki - the Esplanade. Everything seems curiously empty of tourists until we get to the Kauppatori (open market) and Kauppahalli (covered market) where there is a normal bustle as associated with European capitals. After taking a look at the stands filled with reindeer products from meat to furs and antlers ... read more

I went to Finland to attend James and Karita's wedding. You may remember them from my travels in India. Their wedding was done really well. Great people, great food, and a great venue. I have included a few of my favorite pictures from the wedding. While I was there, my friend Mirva was in Helsinki. She showed me around Helsinki and we met a few of her freinds. Enjoy!... read more

So, I just finished cleaning seagull excrement from my hair. Apparently it’s good luck. Still not convinced about that one, but I’ll get back to that later. Today we decided to leave Estonia on a speedboat for the 90 minute journey to the capital of Finland, Helsinki. I can’t really say I had many expectations prior to going. In fact, it was just kind of one of those side-trips you feel that you should take because of curiosity, because it’s so close, and because you never know if you’ll have the chance again. Suffice to say, I planned for this outing about as poorly as ever. I booked the tickets’ arrival/departure info backwards. I remembered our passports as we were walking out the door, forgetting we were leaving the country (only to be reminded we were ... read more

Sunday, August 21, 2011-Trip Notes Why don't they they let you get wifi for free like in the states? I've been to very few places who'll allow a fee connection. I guess I'll wIt until I hit the info center. I set my alarm for 5:00 AM, but rolled over and got up at about 5:20 AM. I needed a shower, so I spent a little extra time on that. I packed up, got out, and was off by 6:30 AM. Fumbled around trying to find Route 140, Old Helsinki Road. Found it, stopped for breakfast, and was on my way. Pretty good. I usually get very lost finding my way out of a city. Route 140 was just too easy. All of the traffic was on highway. Add to that the fact that it was ... read more

I’ve traveled the width of Finland from west to east into Russia and now back east to west. One thing I’ve learned is that Finland is a snooze outside of Helsinki. The entire country is forest and farmland. Farmhouses are painted the requisite rust red, a holdover from when that was the only color available. Woods. Lakes. More woods, right up to the Helsinki city limits. Our hotel, the Scandic Continental (not the Inter-Continental) is quite luxurious. I more or less love the heated marble bathroom floor, the elegant hallways, the comfy lobby, the first class restaurant, Olivo, off the main lobby, serving Mediterranean cuisine, unique for Helsinki. Yes, they have a sauna and swimming pool on the top floor. The sauna is free until 2:30pm, after which it is 100FIM. They offer body scrubs and ... read more

- kautta.
