Go away’ Alan said as I poked him in the ribs. Just one magical word later and he was at the door, rain-jacket on, tapping his watch impatiently and telling me to get my groove on.
‘Helsinki!’
We dashed through rainy Tallinn and boarded a catamaran to Helsinki, which would take us across the Baltic sea in an hour and forty minutes. Since we were in Robben Island a few years ago with friends, I have dreaded the next catamaran we would take, such was the might with which the previous one had bounced through the choppy waters.
It was fine. Okay, so I clung white-knuckled to the window on the way back, remembering all the time what a sailor in South Africa had said, ‘always look at the horizon line and you’ll be fine.’ And I was fine... until the sun went down and the horizon line disappeared.
We ran off the boat thinking that we’d have to get a bus into the town, but sure it was right there in front of us. That’s the memory we’re left with from Helsinki, how mellow and easy it is as a city, and how friendly and nice
Helsinki
Fancy red building in Helsinki. Think it was a church. its residents are. The buildings are pure Scandinavian, and we saw a wedding with very stylish bride and guests. We took a tram ride around the city, circling it in about an hour. Had coffee and lunch, and walked the streets without a guide-book, but we didn’t really need one as there was something to look at everywhere we went.
It was time to pack though... Russia awaited us and we awaited her. Da.
