Aujourd'hui, on ne manquera pas de s'arrêter au Musée de l'Eglise Orthodoxe car c'est une pure merveille... La ville a son petit charme grâce à sa grand place où se trouve le marché... KUOPIO : La région est habitée depuis environ 10 000 ans, dès la fin de la dernière glaciation. Au début des années 1550, sous l'influence entre-autres de Mikael Agricola on fonde à Kuopionniemi une paroisse et une église est construite en 15523. Certains y voient les débuts de Kuopio4. Kuopio Finland 7 & 8 August We arrived in Kuopio (100,000 people founded under Swedish rule in the 1500s) at lunch time after travelling on some excellent secondary roads...past many lakes...and pine forests! We were really disappointed because we missed an excellent event that is held in this town in the 1st week in July: the 'Wife-carrying World Championship' which has the theme attached ' she aint heavy, she's my wife'!!!!! Yes you guessed it, the husband has to carry his 'wife' over his shoulder 253.3m obstacle course, through water traps and over hurdles to achieve the fastest time. The winner gets the wife's weight in beer!!!! How funny is that? Non-the-less, we parked in the city centre and found the very helpful Tourist Office on Market Square, and had lunch. Day Seven, Wednesday, 27th July 2011 Mantuharju to Punkasalmi We set off for Savonlinna in the morning . the drive took two hours through wooded and lake landscapes, interspersed with small farms with wheat fields. We arrived in Savonlinna and set off to see the 15th Century castle Olavinlinna – Olaf’s castle. A massive stone structure built in the 1400’s, on a natural stone mound, set in the middle of the lake. It was built as a fortress against the Russians, and I imagine that at the time it would have been impregnable. I imagine that it would have been cold and damp and very uncomfortable place to live in the early days. The rooms were dark with stony walls and small window apertures, useful more for defence than light. High ceilings, and uneven stone floors ... read more
